I am at a dilemma where I need to record screen perfect from my 486, but my card only outputs VGA. I do not have and VGA to scan line converters or anything of that sort, but I am looking for a box that can take VGA resolutions from 320x200 to 1280x1024. A big bonus is if it can take refresh rates lower than 50hz, but that's optional. What it outputs in I don't really care. It can be NTSC RF, PAL RF, ATSC, QAM, Composite, Component, HDMI, or DVI. I have facilities to use them all, I just can't record from VGA.

I was looking at this, it's cheap, the reviews are good, but I need to know that it will take a 320x200 signal as is used very commonly in MANY DOS games.

Suggestions? I know Phil does some sort of recording, but I am not sure what as It always looks so good.

I don't think you're going to find a "good" solution for under fifty bucks. Most of the "best" capturers around here are using Epiphan DVI2PCIe cards which occasionally pop up on Ebay but even then you're looking at $200+. If you have a PCI slot your best "budget" bet might be an ATI Rage/Radeon with S-video out, and record off that using an EZcap or something like it. It will be locked to 60Hz (maybe not a bad thing) but *will* show 320x200, BIOS screens, textmode, etc.

Or use DOSBox or PCEm and get "perfect" captures for free.

Maybe I should add a 50 USD cap, less is good. I do not have that much to spend on something I won't be using that many times.

Filming the screen is your best option then. If you have a semi-modern smartphone you are set.

I am asking for a converter. I find it impossible to believe nobody has invented a device for under 50 bucks that can go from VGA to something TV recognizable. I don't need a capture card, I already have three.

I know what you're asking, and I'm telling you what I think.

VGA is obsolete pretty much and converters are now specialised devices. Most capture cards these days dropped resolutions and only do 720p and 1080p, which means you don't just need a converter, but a scaler altogether.

In terms of your budget and the final quality of the video, my advice is to film it with your phone.
