My post here has 2 GeForce256 cards. Both SDR, one 16MB and one 32MB.

So I got a 64MB GF256 DDR. Problem is the VGA port has banding issues. 3D runs fine.

Fortunately, there is a DVI port. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's DVI-I. I tried a HDMI cable with HDMI > DVI-D (single link) adapter, and no signal. Anyone know what this connector is? It looks like a DVI-D (dual link), but a little different (2 more pins near that - ).

This is DVI-D single link (dual link didn't exist back then). GF256 doesn't support dual head, so there is no reason to use DVI-I... you can connect either VGA or DVI-D, but not both at the same time. DVI->HDMI should work, in theory at least. There might be some compatibility issues, this is one of the first videocards to support DVI. Also the resolution might be pretty limited, 1024x768 and 1280x1024 should be fine, 1600x1200 might work, anything higher definitely won't and I wouldn't count on widescreen either.

On the other hand, I own the only 64-bit SDR GF256 around here, aren't I ?

You are not alone. I also found an ASUS at the local market a few years back.
V6600MX/32M is it? Never thought they made 64 bit GF256s, much less the SDR versions!

Is that thing even faster than a TNT2 M64? What's the point of cripping the GF256 to the point it's barely better than a card 1/4 the price.. SMH..

I'm guessing that it should be faster than an M64 at least. As to why they made it, I have no clue either. I do have an ASUS TNT2 M64, I'll see if I can compare them when I have time.

One of the first yes but certainly not the first.

I have a 16MB TNT2 Pro that ONLY has DVI-I. It's the oldest card in my collection that has support for digital displays IIRC. It may very well be the first card to be DVI only too now that I think about it. I have no clue what it's max digital resolution is. I've never bothered to check.

Thank you for your help

Creative made Dell's boards too but there not branded like most of there OEM stuff is. You should be able to use the BIOs from one of those. I'd pull the BIOs off mine if I hadn't sold it when someone offered me 50 dollars for it.

No, I'm a developer myself, and was speaking from a capability point-of-view.
The GF256/GF2 already introduced per-pixel lighting, stencilbuffering, hardware-accelerated shadowmaps and such.

If the 256 does fully support this, why was shading only advertized as a feature on the Geforce 2?

Well, what I would like is if someone would run DXCapsViewer on a GeForce256, dump all its caps to file and upload it, so we can make 100% sure that it supports all these features.

There are some claims out that a bug affects the GPU, limiting its utilization of an extra set of texture mapping units originally meant to be fully featured. What this means for shading is unclear to me, but the OpenGL extension page does warn about incorrect results with numbers above 2.

Fun fact: The DDR's memory bandwidth is exactly 10 times higher than its pixel rate. I wonder if this ratio was intentional.

Ill do it if someone zips up DXCapsViewer and sends it to me. I couldn't find the program when I went to do this last time.

It used to be included with the DirectX SDK, these days it's integrated with the Windows SDK.
I've zipped up the last DX SDK and the latest versions here (not sure if the latest version would run on older OSes, the June 2010 version should still work on XP, probably on Win98 even):

If you do File->Print whole tree to file, then it should generate a dxview.log file on the desktop. That file should have all the info we want.

Should be able to get this done later. I hope your right about 98SE because that's where the GF256 resides currently.

Could do the same with an OpenGL viewer while you're at it.

You have to remember that NV10 was released in very early 1999 as Quadro. Even Pentium 3 Katmai wasn't released at that time.

Nvidia officially announced it in November 1999....

investigating this "early geforce is quadro its before katmai" bullshit it seems sourced from TechPowerup which assumes the default release date of any video card to be January 1 if it's not specified for its artificially generated articles. Even worse, Wikipedia cites Techpowerup's error as fact and that's okay on their terms because it's a citation!!!1!

We don't "have to remember" revised history because it surely makes sense they'd release a DX7 card before even DX6.1 came out.
