hi all

i have recently got a voodoo1 4mb pci graphics card

i noticed that the main 3dfx chips get warm very quickly and after about an hour of use and it get starts to get hottish (i noticed when my monitor went off while playing gl quake but after about an hour or so and turn off the pc and turn on again it came back on)

is this normal for voodoo 1 card

the model of card is - diamond multimedia monster 3D Rev e (pic of exact model in link below)

Its normal for a Voodoo to get really warm, though I never had mine just shut down before.

Its a good idea to add at least a passive heatsink to any Voodoo card.

it didnt shut down - just the monitor as the sound was still going

what size of heatsink is needed and would i use thermal paste to put it on

would pci extractor fan also help aswell to help with airflow

would these work with them

Depends on the airflow in the case. It would be good if the PCI/ISA slot on the chips side of V1 card is free. Air extractor might be pretty useful as even passive heatsinks need some airflow to do the cooling.

Those heatainks and extractor seem like they would do a good job.

You can also get some airflow going by fixing a fan in the hard drive bay area to blow air horizontally. This would help cool any other components thear the voodoo card as well.

I used double-sided sticky pads to hold a 90mm fan in my case so hard drives getting in the way werent much of a problem.
It all depends in how the case is designed, though.

Got a couple of V1 era cards myself and it doesn't take much to keep them cool, simple passive coolers with a fan nearby will be more than enough to keep it happy. Voodoo 2 is the same though one doesn't need to go to extremes unlike some have gone to.

I currently use a PCI slot exhaust fan directed at the V1 card, still considering heatsinkgs for it. There is also a intake fan at the front of my case (currently mounted to extended ISA card holder)
My V2 SLI setup is a bigger challenge, I 3D printed a special 80 MM fan mount which fits between the PCB of the 2 cards and added a fan, also added a 80 mm intake fan like with the V1 build, also considering heatsinks for the V2 but thats a little more work for what I planned with those.

I have extra cooling on my sli setup and also on voodoo3 cards but i never cooled a v1. Never had a problem but ofcourse cooling it will always be better.

Some of my v1 cards came standard with heatsinks on both chips.

Pairing a v1 with a very fast cpu can make them run a bit hotter.
