hello, I have 3 2D-only PCI video cards. Buying a better one is not an option. I'm wondering which is better.

Trident 9440 - 1MB 50ns
Trident 9680 - 1MB 60ns
Alliance ProMotion AT24 - 1MB 60ns

The computer is this:

PCChips M572 v1.2 with last patched bios
AMD K6-2 450 @ 83.3x5.5 (458MHz)
Intel Triton 440TX
64MB PC133 SDRAM (max cacheable ram)
10GB Maxtor IDE
Windows 98SE

I won't be playing any games on this, It's just for the sake of having it working. I had before an Super7 computer, but the PSU killed everything, so I want to build another but don't have anything better.

Thanks.

I'd vote for the Trident 9680 of those. The Alliance card is a bit funky compatibility-wise. The Trident is slow, but it'll work with almost everything.

ok, thanks.

Is there any noticeable difference in between 60ns and 50ns in the memory? because the 9680 has vesa support and 60ns memory, but the 9440 has no vesa support at all and 50ns memory

50ns memory is slightly faster, but the 9680 is a faster and more featureful chip than the 9440, so you're losing nothing. If you do decide to run any games, the 9680 will work with more of them due to the VESA support.

thanks

I've noticed that the 9680 has directdraw support, while the 9440 not. the alliance AT24 only has directdraw support under windows 9x with the driver supplied by alliance.

also, the 9680 gets detected and installed correctly in every windows since 98se, windows 95 installs a basic trident svga driver, that it isn't very useful nor fast.

There are drivers for the 9680 available under Win95 (and Win3.1, NT3, NT3.5, NT4), they just don't come with it. I don't have a link offhand, though. I've got one of those cards floating around, but I try not to use it because it's slower than ATI, S3 and Matrox hardware from the same time, and certainly slower than such other PCI options as the Matrox G450, 3dfx Voodoo3 and nVidia TNT2.

Got two voodoo rush cards and that alliance 2D chip is horrendous, my advice is to hunt around for something better as even the Trident doesn't have much of a punch in windows.
