Hello. My motherboard is MSI MS-6178 WH5, with onboard video: GMCH chipset, 2D/3D graphics, 4mb display cache. I already have a Voodoo3 2000 PCI installed and I'm considering getiing a voodoo1/2 in order to play some pre 1998 glide games that are not supported by the V3. Will I need an extra PCI gpu to work with the Voodoo1/2 (like the S3 Virge) or the onboard vga is good for the job? Thanks.

You can even do without the pass-through cable if you don't mind manually changing the card that your monitor is plugged into every time you start using your Voodoo card. (Or you can get a VGA switch box.)

You either have the Voodoo doing all the work or your 2d graphics card doing all your 2d work, so as long as there are no resource conflicts or anything, you can use pretty much any card for 2d.

The Voodoo2's output signal is literally just a switch on the Voodoo card - if the Voodoo is active, the switch on the card directs the Voodoo output to the monitor. If the Voodoo is not active, the switch on the card connects the passthru cable to the monitor output. You could use a card with DVI output, hook that DVI cable up to your monitor, also hook up your Voodoo to your monitor with VGA, and use your monitor to switch between your cards if you wanted. (I'm not specifically saying to do that, as most people would find that less convenient, just saying it's possible.) This is sort of a more detailed explanation of what was already said.

Short answer: No problem.

Yes, I always ramble this much.

You can also use these splitters to do the same job as the original cables, I used these before I got hold of the proper cables. Work a treat - One end in vga card and other to Voodoo, just have one plug unused afterwards!

My bud found a Diamond Voodoo-S3 Virge combo relatively cheap (30euros) so I'm going to test them in the next few days. I also found in some local shops a Serial 9-Pin Male To Female 9-Pin PC Converter Extension Cable https://www.skroutz.gr/s/10758112/KBS-Cable-V … -1-5m-3921.html and a VGA Splitter - VGA HD 15pin Male to 2 x VGA Female https://www.skroutz.gr/s/11159782/OEM-VGA-mal … male-11548.html. I believe either of these should work.

VGA is 15 pin and the connector is HD15 and serial is 9 pin and the connector is DB9. HD connectors have 3 rows of pins. DB connectors have 2 rows of pins. They aren't interchangeable.

For a splitter, wouldn't you want to look for the opposite, one with 2 male plugs?

Like the ordinary passthrough cable, the splitter has one male connector and one female connector; that's all you really need. You wouldn't want to connect both female ends of the splitter at the same time.

Oups, I didn't notice... So I guess I 'll need the 9pin connector.

I'm sorry I got confused. Will I need the 15pin connector or the 9pin?

edit: Nevermind I just found out it is 15pin

I'm just stating the obvious, but you can even use two monitors.

Everything worked out fine with the 15pin pass through cable. I found a Diamond s3 Virge bundle with a Diamond voodoo for 30euros. So I currently use this combination. Haven't tested the onboard yet with the voodoo but I'm sure it will work.
offtopic: I'm baffled about how good GLQuake looks!

I thought that too, and then I learned it lacks fullbrights and overbrights. I prefer the original, software Quake in hi res.
