I bought this card recently- and god I am hoping I'm right that it's better than a Mach32- and I had a look on the driver library just now... I don't see any. It's an SC 805 based card- perhaps there's generic drivers that would work?

For what OS?

VESA utilities and such for DOS, and Win 3.11 drivers, maybe NT 3/3.5.
E: On this note, the Mach32 has a utility to change DOS mode refresh reates which is /amazing/ for playing Doom or whatever. Is there a way to do this for other cards via a generic utlity or something?

Thanks!

Side question: this uh, is faster than a Mach32 right? I basically got it free but I'm gonna be pretty dissapointed if this doesn't make Doom 2 playable at good settings.

Without knowing the rest of your system specs, it's hard to tell. Doom gets about 25 fps on a fast DX2/66, for reference.

With a DX2/66, you'll probably be at 25 fps or less. Use Phil's DOS benchmark kit to test Doom. The closer to 25 you get, the closer to ideal. I'd be curious, post the results from both cards!

35fps is ideal for DOOM, and in many instances a 486DX2/66 can come close or meet that frame rate. When the screen gets crowded, expect some slowdown.

I like how ID Software is essentially a barometer for performance :

Commander Keen will run on an 8088/8086 but is best played on a 286.
Wolfenstein 3D runs on a 286 but is best played on a 386
DOOM runs on a 386 but is best played on a 486
Quake runs on a 386 but is best played on a 486
Quake II runs on a Pentium but is best played on a Pentium II
Quake III runs on a Pentium II but is best played on a Pentium III

So can anyone confirm it's faster than a mach32 and soothe my worries?

I'm afraid it's not so clear cut. According to vgamuseum.info, the Mach32 is faster in PC Player and Quake, but the S3 805 is faster in 3dbench. you'll just have to benchmark both cards in your own machine and decide which one you like better.

It might depend on how much memory your Mach32 has. That card is crippled when only 1MB is installed (64 bit memory only when 2MB is installed, else 32 bit).

I would expect it to be a little faster in DOS, but way more compatible. The Mach32 would kick its ass in Windows though.

I don't run Windows on it so the should be just fine, and it does have only 1 meg installed.
According to Wintune 2.0 benches I found here the S3 805 based card shoooould be twice as fast? We shall soon see.

The S3 801/805 was probably a better match for the VGA Wonder or the Mach 8. Mach32 (when configured with 2MB) should have been roughly equal to the S3 928.

Can confirm, it /is/ faster for Doom, off hand at least 30%. Although the Mach32 won't boot now for some weird reason, so I can't compare directly- it's much more playable.
Anyone got OS/2 drivers for this?

The win 3 drivers here are giving me a missing file error on install. Does nayone have another source?
I tracked down another source and... same error? wat
Error Installing CGA40850.F aboring install.

Fixed, files are there but... named wrong? they're named .fon, changing them to .f makes the installer work.
Fuck that's dumb, and it's like that for all versions of the drivers I can find.
