VOGONS

I've been googling for a bit and most hits are over 10 years old (and some people's responses were get rid of that voodoo card and get a GeForce...HA). There is way more we know now then we did then (like never sell retro graphics cards again!)

So, in general, what is the best 3dfx Voodoo3 3000 driver?
x3dfx comes with the overclock.exe, I didn't see that when I tried the official drivers. (After adding a fan I might OC to 3500 speed, 190-something-MHz)
I read MesaFX recommends Amigamerlin (if I even need it)
I'll be paring this with a single Diamond Monster 3D II Voodoo2 with the FastVoodoo2 4.0 GE drivers.

Thanks!

I recommend sticking with the 'latest' drivers released by 3dfx.

Pentium III @ 1.28Ghz - Intel SE440xBX-2 - 384MB PC100 - ATi Radeon DDR 64MB @ 200/186 - SB Live! 5.1 - Windows ME

Do they come with the overclocking ability? I tried them before and I could not find the option but I cannot say I looked hard. The x3dfx 3rd party drivers have an overclock.exe that enables an overclocking tab.

I just like the option to but only to 3500 levels and only after a fan mod. IIRC, the 3000 and 3500 are the same chip?

I have mine running at 195/195 with a 120mm fan keeping it cool. I use Vctrl to set my clocks. http://www.3dfxzone.it/koolsmoky/vctrl.html

Unless you have some specific games that you want to run, stick with the latest drivers. If you have to ask, then the 3rd party drivers released years afterwards are also not for you. The latest reference drivers should be the most trouble-free ones.

Speaking of specific games, Warhammer Dark Omen is notoriously bad in its D3D compatibility. Even on a Voodoo2 you have to use specific drivers in order for it to work:

Voodoo 2 - 3.03.00 and earlier
Voodoo 3 - 1.03.00 DX6 and earlier
Voodoo 5 - I haven't found a single driver that will run this game (yes I tried them all!)

Quake 2 3DNow! will also crash on Voodoo2 cards when using 3DNow! 3DfxGL if you go above 3.01.01 drivers.
Rayman 2 has an issue on the Voodoo5 where if you try to use GXSetup (its setup utility, allowing you to use higher resolutions such as 1600x1200) it will always crash, unless you use the very first driver release (1.00.01).

Silly driver issues like these always creep up, however you'll be mostly fine if you use the reference drivers as said. Nvidia's drivers break compatibility with far more games than 3Dfx ever did anyway.

Wow! That's quite extensive. Thanks

Emulation maybe but not for original hardware... besides 10 years isn't long ago. Like the others are saying, I use reference drivers on my V1, V2 and V5 rigs. The magic happened during 3dfx, not years after...

No problem! Let us know how high you can get your clocks.
