I have recently built a retro machine, which is a P4 running Win98 SE and using Matrox G400max for primary GPU paired with SLI Voodoo2. This is probably the latest and greatest hardware that still supports Win9x, anything later is really aimed at WinXP.

I notice that many D3D games have a built in setting to switch from Primary D3D adaptor to Voodoo, but some don't. I don't remember exactly which ones, but some games only have a setting to select D3D or software rendering, but do not let me select d3d device, and run on the Matrox by default. Is there a way to force them to run on the Voodoo?

You can use PowerStrip or 3Dcc (3D Control Center, you can find it on VOGONSdrivers AFAIR). I like 3Dcc because it's pretty simple to use, but beware that sometimes it can glitch out. If you want to play something, try with 3Dcc first and if it doesn't move on to the 3Dfx cards, use PowerStrip 😀.
