Geforce 256 DDR broken?

Postby SubZero » 2017-10-28 @ 07:59

Hi guys,

I managed to get my hands on what looked to be a mint condition Creative CT6970 Geforce 1 DDR, including box/accesories. However I cannot get the card to work. The card works during post and as a standard PCI card in Windows, but once I install drivers I get a black screen when entering Windows. I have tried plenty of drivers versions all way back to Detonator 3.65 (which I believe is first driver with support for Geforce 256).

I am using this card in a socket 370 platform, Asus CUSL2-C motherboard, and other tested cards (Geforce 3, Geforce FX5900XT) works fine in this machine. I cannot find any physical flaws on the card, see attached pictures. Is this a common issue for these cards, and anyone know if there is a chance to fix it?

Many thanks for your input.

That does not sound as a common issue unfortunately. They install like any other Nvidia card and should work with drivers that are compatible.

I'm afraid the card is damaged, look very closely and see if there are components missing/shorts of any sort/deep scratches etc. Sometimes comparing the card with high res pictures from the web can come up with answers.

Also always start simple and just clean the card, especially the agp contacts.

What I would try:
1, boot into VGA mode and increase the resolution step by step.
2, reinstall the AGP bridge with standard PCI bridge driver and see if solves the problem.
3, dump the video BIOS and check if the previous owner had overclocked it.

The only time that's happened to me and it WASN'T due to a broken card was with my Fury MAXX, due to a compatibility issue with the chipset.

There shouldn't be anything conflicting with your board and that card, though. Never hurts to try it in a different system though.

Thanks for your comments. First of all I will try to assemble another system to test in.

Update:

I finally got hold of another system to test the card in. Same sympthoms. It doesn't matter if I have Intel chipset drivers installed or not and also I have cleaned the card thoroughly.

What do you guys think of baking the card?

Not sure, but there's a strange black dot on data lane near AGP.

yeah, check continuity on that trace with a multimeter. i've also had a kyro ii fail with the exact symptoms you describe because uswc cache (instead of uc) was selected in the bios; this isn't necessarily the issue here, but worth a look nonetheless.

I've attached an image indicating the "Black Dot" that The Serpent Rider noticed.
