I need to do some stress testing/heat generation on a project I am working on.

I remember back in the day having a way to set Quake 2 to run a Crusher loop. It wasn't via commands. I believe it was a Autoexec.cfg file I customized and ran via a shortcut on the desktop.

I cannot for the life of me find an example of this on the web nor do I recall such a small thing from 20 years ago (I am so old ...... 🙁 )

If I recall correctly all quake games had a scripting language and an "autoexec.cfg" file on the "baseq2" ( in your case ) would be executed automatically on the game start.

For an endless loop all you need to do is to execute a file from itsself, so for an endles loop it should be something like:

demomap demoX
exec autoexec.cfg

where demoX is the demo you want to play forever, or until a stack overflow in the game, but that should happen after several hours, if ever.

-Put the demo file in the /baseq2/demos folder.
-Run Quake2, open up the console.
-Type timedemo 1
-Type cl_maxfps 999
-Type demomap crusher.dm2
-Sit back and laugh at the crazy fps you get on a modern pc.

This came up looking for looping but says quake 3. dunno if it works in q2

Put this into your autoexec.cfg:

set loop "s_initsound 0 ; snd_restart ; timedemo 1 ; demo <demoname> ; set nextdemo vstr loop"

Start Q3 and type "vstr loop" from the console.
