I'm having trouble increasing the Windows 98SE desktop resolution past 640x480 on my Rendition Verite V2200 AGP. The drivers I'm using are the latest (Version 3.0 beta 5, 1999-06-02).

This is because the refresh rate being set is something that is not compatible with ANY of my TVs or monitors. They're all fully capable of supporting VGA at 60, 70, 72 and 75Hz. However, the V2200 seems to be setting the refresh rate to something (68Hz) between or outside of this range.

I've tested all resolutions with the above refresh rates with 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768 using a Matrox Millenium card and have had no issues. Using different drivers such as release drivers (09/98) and earlier beta drivers (12/98) still produces the same problem.

The software display settings are diabolically atrocious! The refresh rate settings can be selected but when moving away from the tab and returning again, all the settings have been reset. Just touching the Pan up, down, left, right controls force the refresh rate to be pushed to something the displays cannot support. I'm having to control the system blindly if I can't back out of the changes made.

I've attempted switching around the selected Monitor in Windows but that doesn't help. I've tried the MultiRes tool from EnTech but that wasn't able to force a specific refresh rate. Would PowerStrip help to solve the problem? I heard there are some Diamond drivers that are more reliable, but aren't they for the Stealth II S220 (V2100)?

This problem was solved by removing the reference drivers and installing the Hercules Thriller 3D v0.85 drivers found here:
ftp://ftp.mpoli.fi/software/UPLOAD/TH3DW085.EXE

I was able to use all of the resolutions in my original post and different refresh rates (tested 60, 70, 75 and 85) and all worked flawlessly.
The driver software also appears to be much better quality.

These drivers should work for all other generic Rendition V2200 PCI/AGP cards. I'm using an Elephant Rendition V2200 8MB AGP with Phoenix BIOS version 161.
