So having these FX 3450's that are really 6800GS cards has me wondering, my X2 4200 939 rig (opty 180 in the mail from china 😁) should i pull my 7900GTX cards and throw these 6800GS's on in SLI instead. I know its slower but it feels more right to run them that way somehow, like a 7900GTX SLI belongs more with AM2 or 775 Core2

Something I like to ask my self when picking parts is, "would this be a reasonable upgrade for this system?"

The 7900GTX is period correct too.

According to Wikipida the FX 3450 launched in June of 05. The 7900GTX launched sometime in early 06. The 64 X2 4200+ launched in May of 05. The Opti 180 launched in Sep of 05. You're good all around for authenticity either way you go.

If they are true Quadros then no one would have ever bought them for a x2 4200 system.

If you want authenticity, those Quadro's need to be in some kind of multi proc Xeon workstation.

I'm going to turn them into 6800's

Fun project for sure, but I think we have to leave authenticity out of the equation. I understand once they report as 6800's you're good. But that is a project that no one would have ever done for that time period.

For that time period I was always enamored by Xeon work stations, Quadro GPU's and multi CPU systems. I don't me to inflect my own style on you, but an authentic, period correct Xeon workstation with those Quadros in it would be a fun project. And having SLI 7900GTX's cupled with a Opti 180 during that time would have been a pretty baller enthusiast setup.
