Hi there,

my first Mac ever was a MacMini CoreDuo 1,66Ghz with the builtin Intel GMA950. The Mac was released about 2006 and it was a mighty fine machine, except for the graphics 🙁
12 years later I bought it again, because I am currently going upwards in the Games-Compatibility for Retro-Gaming. In my case this means Games from 1999/2000 upwards.
The MacMini has 10.5.8 installed and also WinXP Home SP2 with the updated 2.1 Bootcamp driver.

It's really hard to find deeper Informations of software tools/tweaks for that GPU because no one seems to be interested in that anymore.

For my purpose (retro-gaming 1999upwards) the GMA950 seems to be a really good choice. The MacMini is really small and silent machine nearly perfect for that.
Though I have some questions and I hope that we can solve some of the issues.

Most Informations seems to be lost. Only first page: https://web.archive.org/web/20100209221059/ht … /intel9x-gaming
Some other Informations: http://neoswrath.blogspot.com/2009/03/intel-g … 950-review.html https://web.archive.org/web/20080419072913/ht … l?artnum=303407

List Of Games compatible with Intel 945 GMA 950
THIS LIST HAVE BEEN COPIED FROM - http://groups.google.com/group/intel9x-gaming/web/games-that-work-intel-gma-950
And, I am not the creator of this list. Its updated till May 29, 2010.

Intel 945 Compatibility List

Notes:
- It is recommended you patch any program or game to the latest version because of optimizations.
- When on Windows Vista or 7, running all games as administrator fixes most problems.
- Great page about why most newer games fail to run http://compatible-games.blogspot.com/2008/04/why-latest-games-dont-run-on-intel.html
- Make sure you have the latest graphics drivers for your OS. Modded Drivers work best though (unless stated otherwise on a game below)
- If a demo is listed below, 90% chance the full version of the game will give equal results
- Software Vertex and addgame.reg are the same thing. Software vertex can be added from the IDAMT program.

So here some of my experiences:

1. With DVI-Connection there is no Fullscreen in 640x400 / 320x240. All other resolutions seem to be fine.
2. The Driver has a "rotation-option" that can not be checked out. This is mostly no problem, but Re-Volt always switches to 480x640 and this has to be corrected every time. I would love to deactivate those rotated resolutions.
3. 3DMark 2001 shows all features even with Vertex and Pixel-Shaders. It's visable that they are done in "software" but they are fast and 100% OK. That's really a big thing that I did not expect. Can anyone tell me if that can be done for games with pixel- and vertexshader-support? 3d-analyze does not work for morrowind. I do not get pixelshaded water 🙁
4. With this games, the intel gpu shines.
- Unreal 2.26 with S3TC Textures in OpenGL mode. 1024x768 native 15" Eizo. Performance and Quality (5) is fantastic.
- DeusEX (never get a HiresTexuture-Mod working) but the Game look great and runs great.
- UT99 S3tc really fantastic.
- Severance Blade of Darkness (don't know with texturepack is the best, but game looks and runs fantastic
- Outcast. Thankfully 512x384 is fullscreen. The game is one of my faforites.
- SoldierX Himmerlsstürmer. Nothing more to say, no better sidesshooter known. Steady 60fps and really beautiful gfx.
- Quake2/3 both a great. Quake1 has issues with flickering after the second boot, don't know why.
- still lots of games to be tested

It's a bit of a pity that older games (before 99) mostly refuse to work in WinXP with selected D3d on that configuration. (e.g. nfs3/4/5/nba2000 only software-rendering-mode is working)
The later games mostly require TnL and Vertex-/Pixelshader that do not work either, but beside that the Intel is really great. Did not expect that.

O.S.D.M works great but one DX9 filtereffect seems to be missing. Then I only get a white area. I have to investigate what that is. https://vimeo.com/groups/tstosdm/videos/6880900
In comparison to other older intel IGP's that gma950 does not support JazzJackRabbit2 hardwarescrolling option in 640x400 8Bit. So no smooth scrolling in any resolutions (what a pity!).

If you want to test your Macmini/GMA950 too, please install the "dualcore-patch" for WinXP otherwise the system will generate "hickups" in certain games. This patch is highly recommended.
more to come...

The GMA950 supports Pixel Shader 2.0. I was able to get a result from every 3DMark up to 2005 on it, and even 2006 ran except for the PS3.0 tests. Don't expect good performance though.

I've found it's okay for "big" games up to ~2003 and a fair bit of retro/indie stuff after that. I meant to try UT2004 while I still had my Dell D430 set up but didn't get around to it. A lot of (most??) Unity games should run on it.

Don't know any unity game.
Are you sure about Pixelshader 2.0. Beside 3DMark 2001, I don't know any pixelshader-stuff that works on the GMA950 (but I am at the beginning.
I don't think that Morrowind requires PS 3.0, therefore the PS2.0 should work, but it does not, even using 3d-analyze it does not work.

Btw. nGlide and dgvoodoo do currently not work on my setup. dgvoodoo runs with turok1 but with a lot of gfx-issues.

Edit. I think you are right with PS2.0. I would love to see the PS2.0 in action (beside 3DM2001) Any good demoscene-products known?

it supports PS 2.0, but VS 2.0 is done via software, and it also doesn't support Hardware T&L, so is not even a full "DX7 GPU", it's a very odd thing, and for that it's fairly common to find problems launching some games even older than 2003.

I think the first IGP from Intel with hardware T&L and Vertex shader is the X3100 from the 965G chipset.

and keep in mind there is the GMA 3100 (G31) which is basically the GMA 950, which is newer but inferior to the X3100...

Yes indeed. TnL was a feature a lot of (later 2000) Games required. It will be a bit hard to find matching Software for the GPU, but I think there will be some 😀
I'll keep up trying more stuff, because I love that damn small Macmini so much.

Anyone with a DL-Link for the GMATweaker?

Thx! Great findings. GMA-Tweaker is unavailable. No DL-link found 🙁

I'm getting an old Dell D430 working for some projects, and I'd also like to know if anyone has a version of GMATweaker? The site was never archived and no longer exists.

The GMABooster app is also date limited and it doesn't seem to be possible to get a serial anymore.

I did all of that back 10 years ago on my GX520 , so I have most of the required modded stuff and boosters and what not for GMA , I will post them (upload them) soon

Thanks. I've got the last version of GMAbooster but it had a weird time limiter on it that was intended to force you to update by a certain date - doesn't actually do anything to the functionality but if the date is after some point in 2017 it refuses to start. I've just been switching the date back, running it, and then fixing the date. It doesn't require the program to run after making the change so if anyone knows what setting it's actually changing for the clock it seems like it'd be easy to throw something together to just do that without the annoyance.

It's impressive how much good the Intel linux driver support is. I've tested these iGPU into a linux distribution still built impressively on 32bit and latest kernels which support (I suppose it's only partially compatible if I remember correctly) the OpenGL 2.1 which is needed for a modern browser on this Atom N280. .

Please do, the original site is long gone now and a version without a time limit no longer exists anywhere online.
