Not glide related, but newer directx and nvidia drivers can cause issues. Try DX 7 and nvidia 30.82 or lower

When there are problems, always start with using 1 card first so take out one voodoo2 card and try again. When that works test both cards separately before trying sli.

asus tx97-e, 233mmx, voodoo1, s3 virge ,sb16
asus p5a, k6-3+ @ 550mhz, voodoo2 12mb sli, gf2 gts, awe32
asus p3b-f, p3-700, voodoo3 3500TV agp, awe64
asus tusl2-c, p3-S 1,4ghz, voodoo5 5500, live!

It's Direct X for sure. DX9 is too current for Windows 98. You want to download and install Direct X 7.0a. I use that on my Win98 build and everything runs like butta 😊

Same here. Switched from 9 to 7.0a and most games ran without a hitch.

Okay. I switched to DirectX 7.0a. I think I may have another issue. I recently changed my audio drivers from VXD to WDM. I've heard that WDM on Windows 98 can provide a degraded performance. But, I'm unable to remove them. All attempts result in either (1) my system hard locking or (2) it rebooting during removal without any change.

I've tried

  • installing the previous drivers
  • uninstalling the WDM drivers
  • removing the sound card in Device Manager
  • physically removing the card

Uninstalling results in this message:

The log file 'C:\Program Files\Creative\SBLive\SBLive.isu' is not valid or the data has been corrupted. Uninstallation will not continue.

All I know that works against the fabled V2 SLI setup would be games that read+write to the pixel buffer per frame. SLI must be disabled for those.

GL games can't really do that so those should be fine.

Downgrading your Nvidia driver would probably help too (61.76 or lower for a Geforce2 on W9X, anything after that point is regression city)

It would be a good idea to reinstall windows 98 on that PC.. maybe onto another hard drive as a test install first to get the right drivers set up first. nvidia drivers after 45.23 have issues in windows 98, but for geforce 2 era cards, 30.82 is the sweet spot. Also directx 7

Thanks for the advice. I spent quite a bit of time troubleshooting and I believe that it came down to my WDM audio drivers. I had to reinstall Windows in order to switch back to VXD. I have not reinstalled GL Quake, but FreeSpace 2 and Diablo 2 are running fine. I had intended to run DirectX 7, but one of the updates I installed put me at 9. As far as my nvidia drivers, I'm running 71.84.
