I was quite surprised to find out the Elgato Cam Link 4k HDMI capture supports undocumented input at 640x480 1024x768 and 1600x1200 uncompressed at 60 fps (800x600 does not seem to work). This, combined with my Gefen VGA to DVI Scaler Plus seems to give good results (to me) even for 320x200 output from a Voodoo 3 VGA in DOS (when scaled to 1600x1200).

Keep in mind that you can grab a datapath visionrgb-pro off ebay for $30 or less that has virtually pixel-perfect output in any dos mode without requiring extra dongles. You'll need pci, so either you have a modern motherboard with pci, or you get to do proper retro capture by sticking the card into an xp-era machine.

Good point and probably a better solution for someone more seriously into retro capture . As it stands, the XP machine I have is a fairly recent i3 based system that runs legacy PCI through an early revision Asmedia PCI bridge and those are known to have issues .

If I did not already have the Elgato, I would likely consider the Datapath (though shipping makes it more than twice that $30 in my neck of the woods).

Finally, I prefer an external solution that I can run off of any modern USB 3.0 desktop or laptop . Capturing on a desktop legacy systems has its charm though (I run an Aja Kona LHe on a dedicated 10-year old Windows 7 system that will never get upgraded).

Oh, and I forgot to mention the Elgato Cam Link 4k HDMI does work fine under Windows 7 (product blurb says it requires Windows 10) with third party software (OBS, Virtualdub) .
