Hello everybody on this forum.
This is my first post ever on this forum. I have been around and on this forum reading and reading for years and I really love this forum.
What can I say about myself. I am 37 years old. I live in Sweden, and I work as an Electrician. I have been playing around with computers since I was 12 years old. I started to attend to Lan:s when I was 16 years old. And have been laning nonstop since then. Nowdays I am arranging and attending retroLans a couple of times every year. At our retroLans you arent allowed to have newer stuff then the 31 dec 1999.
More about that here:

Recently I built my own 1999 Amd K6-3+ rig with a geforce256 card, and I found this exciting thread

AMD K6 3DMARK, aiming for stars.

I really enjoyed that thread. I gave it a try and realised I couldn't compete with the excellent scores posted in that thread.
I am a Quake fan and have spent a lot of time getting out as much performance as possible out of quake2 and quake3.
Overclocking, cpu, gpu, registry hacks, bios settings, cfg files. My scores in quake2 and quake3 is right now as follows.

Quake2 timedemo 1, map demo1.dm2 127fps 800x600 resolution
Quake3 timedemo1, demo four 86 fps. 800x600 resolution

My system
Motherboard: Asus P5A rev 1.04 latest bios
Cpu: Amd k6-3+ 616mhz
Gpu: Geforce 256 stock speeds
Memory: 128mb sdram c2 timings

The rules is simple.Any K6, k6-2 ,k6-3 cpu, Full screen. Any gpu. Any OS, any resolution.
So basically no rules except some sort of k6 cpu and a sound card.
High scores is all that counts.
Please post your tweaks 😀 I gonna put them to good use 😀

Anyone up for it?

Edit: I will later this evening post some screenshots and a youtube video of my rigg running timedemos in quake

Sorry man, I loved the other thread but I'm not into the Quake thing (I know...), don't even have a copy!

I can also not use my systems for a while since I'm busy relocating all my stuff into another room. All my stuff is stacked and in boxes etc. right now.

The other threat was basicly about using the right drivers to get the best boost in performance in 3dmark 2000. I don't know if it would help in any other program but I think it will so use those drivers when benchmarking in windows.

asus tx97-e, 233mmx, voodoo1, s3 virge ,sb16
asus p5a, k6-3+ @ 550mhz, voodoo2 12mb sli, gf2 gts, awe32
asus p3b-f, p3-700, voodoo3 3500TV agp, awe64
asus tusl2-c, p3-S 1,4ghz, voodoo5 5500, live!
asus a7n8x DL, barton cpu, 6800ultra, Voodoo3 pci, audigy1

What I enjoyed in the other thread was the tinkering with combos with video cards and drivers. Finding the perfect combo.
With the quake games it is basically the same thing. But you can also tinker with the game it self. One thing that I noticed is that quake2 is very gpu dependant while quake3 is very cpu dependant.

Once I tried a p4 1.7ghz with a tnt2m64 vanta (slow video card) and got 65fps in quake2 and 138fps in quake3.With an another system, a P2 400mhz (slow cpu) with voodoo2 sli I had 110 fps in quake2 and about 85 in quake3!. Thats is how cpu dependant and gpu dependant the two games are.

Try enabling gl_vertex_arrays in Quake 2, it may or may not provide a boost.

I used the 45.23 driver I will try the detonator driver ASAP
I have tried a couple of different drivers. 45.23 was the fastest I tried.

The drivers I have tried so far is
45.23
61.76
71.84

The agp drivers I am using is the ULI
IntegratedDriver2.13.exe

Ye ye. Well I guess I need to clarify. On our lans we have a rule about graphic cards. Norhing newer then 31 dec 1999. Cpu max 850mhz regardless of type and year, just to make it easier for those who has newer stuff and might not have funds or time to get the purist stuff. Its very hard to find 30-40 people that are willing to attend to a retrolan.

How new are your Geforce drivers?

Detonator 12.41 at least should be faster for compiled vertex arrays. It was slower in older driver versions

If not the drivers, it could have something to do with Quake 2 using glArrayElement instead of glDrawArrays/glDrawElements.

If you read the other topic the best thing about using Geforce256/geforce2/geforce3 is being able to use the really old drivers which gave a pretty big boost in 3dmark (and perhaps in Quake as well?). We used older drivers like 7.76 and you can even go lower with the first Geforce I guess. At the time I don't think I had my Geforce256 DDR, I don't know.

That's the fun: finding out if a later card with later drivers can be faster or that indeed you need the oldest driver with the slowest card.... or mod drivers so the older accepts the later card etc.

You are absolutely right. It is really fun to try different drivers and chase those extra fps.
The computer I am tinkering with is goin to be used in my upcomming retroLan.
We are going to play Quake2, Quake3, unreal Tournament, Blood, revolt, Star Craft, Need for speed II SE and games like that.

The goal is to get solid frame rates out of Quake3.
The dream is to get over 100fps in demo four, with a pre 2000 graphic card

Right now I am running the cpu in 616mhz 112x5.5.
I might give it a try to run the cpu in 630mhz 105x6
I am not sure I will gain anything with that. Earlier I noticed that 575mhz 105x5 was faster than 600 6x100, because tha agp bus was overclocked. But quake3 is very very cpu dependent. What do you think?

Btw I am going to try a even older detonator driver this eveneing. Im gonna try the 6.31
I looked at this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRhm4aGNI3o
and did the conclusion that the 6.31 driver was the best for me.
I really hope Im gonna getta some more fps 😀

Tried a lot of different drivers. The fastest I tried so far is the detonator 12.41
I even tried a pair of 12mb voodoo2 in SLI. I got 82fps in Quake3 and 122fps in quake2 with the voodoo2 cards.
Not bad at all.
