Ok the problem was the graphics card was overclocked too much.
@550Mhz I get 116Fps with no in game tweaks. No tweaks tried to gain FPS in Quake.

Playing the game itself is silly fast with FPS going up to 300!!! On 1024x768 :0

116fps in quake 3? Did you use a sound card? The sound engine kills the cpu. I got 168fps without a sound card.

116 fps in quake2 is really good.

My record so far in quake2 with my Geforce 256 DDR is in the 140s.

I cant remember witch driver it was. I ended up not using that driver since I lost some fps in quake3.

Edit: btw. I have made a custom version of both quake3 and quake2 with extremely compressed textures and sounds. I have reduced the quake3 pak files with 350 megabytes if data, and quake 2 with something similar. Send me a PM if you want to try ut out. It is basically a low res and low res sound mod. These versions made wonders on low specs computers. I have one computer with a pentium 233mmx @266 with a riva 128. I got 12fps with stock settings in quake2. With my custom quake2 with custom exe and custom cfg I now get 32 frames per second in timedemo1 map demo1.dm2

It is fun to make games playable on machines that back then that almost couldt run the game in the first place. Back in 1997 i went to lans playing Quake 2 every weekend with my pentium 133 with a s3 virge. Probably had around 10 frames per second back then. Stilled played.

Nowdays it is fun to try to get past 60 fps on poor machines, just to get a smooth playable experience

yeah recompressing data, we did this for Fallout 3 and New Vegas, recompress all audio files and also all textures to gain maximum performance.
But the Point was we simply had no money to buy a better computer 😁

Drivers for gpu is not clean, I was testing games. Had about 10 drivers on it. This was done with 7.76.
Windows 98 SE but installed random updates and patches.
DirectX 9.0b
Asus P5a
K6 2+ 660MHz, 600MHz gives 106.8fps
512Mb ram
Geforce 3 Ti200
Aureal vortex 2

Does anyone know witch driver is fastest for the geforce FX 5950 ultra card?

During my early testing with early performance config files I got by oure luck 93fps in demo four in quake3 with my 5950 ultra. I just cant remember witch driver it was.
The thing is that I got less frames per second with all the other cards I tried. So I was thinking If I could find the correct driver combo again I probably could get further than 100 frames per second in demo four in Quake 3.

I know that a FX 5950 ultra bottlenecks the cpu quite hard, so it totally got me by surprise that the FX 5950 performed like that.

Well i remember to get more Frames per Second with a GeForce 3 Ti then with any FX Card in a K6 xD
A Radeon Card did perform slower at Minimum FPS then a Rage 128 with SG-RAM 😒
Also Rage Fury Maxx did not benefit from Second GPU in a K6 😁

I thought that when running these benchmarks, to make it fair that we were supposed to run the default settings on the benchmark?
