Voodoo5 settings for Half Life

Postby kolderman » 2019-6-12 @ 11:13

I would like Half Life 1 to look as good as possible with the Voodoo5. I found 2x anti-aliasing to be the better balance between quality and performance. But what about other settings:

- mip map dithering
- trilinear filtering
- detail bias
- vertical sync

What is a good combination of settings? I am playing at 1024x768 on a 19" LCD screen. When I enabled the first two, the color seemed more saturated, but the rendering was not as "clean".

Thanks.

Mip-map dithering's only relevant when you *can't* use trilinear in a game. It's an approximation of trilinear left over from previous Voodoos where actual trilinear wasn't fully on the table in most cases. It also doesn't get along with multitexturing well so you'll want to disable it.
To enable trilinear, have this in a config or type it in the console:
gl_texturemode GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR
by the way, DOSBox is not for running Windows 9x

Thanks. Is there a reason I should type it in the console if the driver utility allows me to select it (among other options)? And what sort of game really cannot user trilinear?
