Hi.

I have a few gfx cards on hand for a dimension 4100 with a p3 1ghz/128m and Im not sure which is the most appropriate one for it.
All agp:
-fx5600ultra
-gf4 ti4200 (needs a fan fix cause it was removed from the card since it was not spinning anymore)
-x800xt PE

The dim4100 came with a rage 128pro.
Which card would be recommended? I suspect the x800 and fx5600 are jut overkill but I dont mind unless they will cause issues with games running ok with the p3.
os would be 98se.

GeForce FX5600 Ultra can handle anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering much better. So no, it's not overkill at all.

Going to give the fx5600 a try.
I wonder if the p3 will be fast enough for most dx7/8 things at 1024*768

No.

Quake 3 is an OpenGL game and its features are roughly DX6. Remember DX7 was released in 2000, one year after Quake 3.

All but the fastest Pentium 3s will struggle with DX8 games like Max Payne and late DX7 games like Serious Sam, etc.

For very demanding DX8 games try the following:

Splinter Cell
Max Payne 2
GTA III/Vice City
NOLF 1/2
Morrowind

It won't be enjoyable.

gf4 ti4200 for acess to older drivers ( less cpu usage and more compatibility)
x800xt PE for a xp build.

Retro rig 1: Asus CUV4X, VIA c3 800, Voodoo Banshee (Diamond fusion) and SB32 ct3670.
Retro rig 2: Intel DX2 66, SB16 Ct1740 and Cirrus Logic VLB.

I have that same machine and have tried many different video cards with it. So far, the one I've liked the best is the GeForce2 GTS (not on your list, but still cheap and easy to find). Everything newer has felt like overkill and come with definite downsides, most notably game compatibility problems (also fan noise in many cases). I use my Dimension 4100 for Windows 98 gaming, and the GeForce2 GTS runs most games from that era flawlessly. Even with the same drivers (I use ForceWare 45.23), anything GeForce3 and up starts to have compatibility problems.

The GeForce4 Ti 4200 and FX 5600 Ultra would be good for a low-end Windows XP machine (Pentium 4 or Athlon XP), while the X800 XT PE would kick ass in a mid-range Athlon 64 XP machine.

Many here will recommend 3dfx for a Pentium III 1000 system, but the GeForce2 GTS can run many Glide games using dgVoodoo and is a better all-around card than a Voodoo3 or Voodoo5.

Wrappers can't display all Voodoo features correctly without DirectX 9 hardware. And even then you can't emulate how 3dfx cards filtered textures (DX10 or better hardware required).

Sure, but dgVoodoo is still a good 90% solution. For the full 3dfx experience, of course you need real 3dfx hardware. It's just too bad the prices have gotten so obscene. The Voodoo3 3000 was a good deal until recently, but at $100, it's hard to recommend over a $10 GeForce2.

With DX9+ card, yes.
