This is my experience with an LCD and with a newer system (socket 370):
- Ati 9250 PCI - VGA output is ok, nothing to complain but not the sharpest, for games is ok. However the Card also had DVI so I went with that.
- Matrox G450 PCI - VGA output is very good, I might be mistaken maybe just a tiny bit worse than the Mystique 220. Even on this one I used DVI for my monitor.

I know there are many FX5500 made from unknown Chinese manufacturers, I wouldn't trust those for a clean output 😀

Even the most recent modern video cards still support those old video modes.

nVidia is the best for DOS compatibility.

Matrox G400 and G450 "2D" analog picture quality is simply the benchmark for everyone else. As close to perfect filtering as you are going to find. Of course, most other cards were good enough up to about 1280x960, but if you want to go to 1600x1200 and above using VGA, Matrox is the way to go, and the G4xx beat the old Mystiques hands-down.

I had some bad experiences with my Ati 9000 Pro AGP while using DVI for DOS games.

From what I've read on this forum, some early DVI cards have problems with DOS games that run at 70Hz and other "exotic" refresh rates. I have experienced this first hand as a sort of slowdown/stutter when my card was connected to a 17" LCD monitor via DVI. The problem disappeared completely when I switched over to a VGA connection. Same monitor, same graphics card.
