Hi,

i tried a PCIe Bridge with my Athlon XP and it works flawless 😀
anyone else experimented with such Hardware yet ?
i waiting for x16 Adapter to get more powerful cards to work.
As PCI can not deliver power required for stronger HW.

System is Athlon XP 2800+, Nforce2, 1Gb Dual Channel DDR1 400, Shuttle PC Cube.

The Goal is to add a less power hungry but powerful PCIe Card in the Future to my Athlon XP.
Less heat, enough Power for XP Games.

I used PCIe x1 Card for testing purposes, as i had the Asus Neon 8400GS laying Around.

i also tried with VIA C7 with not so good results.
The CN700 Chipset has PCI Problems and therefore DMA Problems with PCIe Card connected..
Windows XP goes Blackscreen with the C7 after Driver is installed and on Linux Dmesg reveals whats the Problem.

As PCI can not deliver power required for stronger HW.

Cards with external power probably will be fine. Not all though, some will try to draw 75 watts from the slot, as specified.

This also is a Option for Tualatin Boards with no AGP

PCI bus without significant overclocking is horrible though.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

Yep, all those PCIe <-> PCI adapter cards all use the same bridge chip which supports 66Mhz PCI operation.

Does 66 MHz PCI actually happen on a desktop board?

PCI as a graphics bottleneck is an interesting question. If bus transfers become significant it will get ugly, but most old games might do quite well. You have a lot of local memory so textures should all be on the card.

I remember people trying this (well the opposite) to get Voodoo 4/5 PCI to operate as 66MHz on a PCIE adapter and most adapters didn't work, even if the chip supported it the adapters were mostly not built for it, but the better ones did.

but it would be interesting to see better cards,

Technically, yes. ASUS were making wide range of fancy "workstation" motherboards. Although not in the Socket A era.

If bus transfers become significant it will get ugly, but most old games might do quite well.

Even Quake 3 is severely bottlenecked by PCI bus. Later titles with increased geometry are borderline playable.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

I can't imagine a faster card would perform much better, there's a reason modern cards aren't made for PCI. I guess you might save a little money since PCI versions of Geforce 8400 / GT430 are tough to find and cost a premium. A fast AGP card would match that system fine.

We also tested Xpress Card to PCIe Adapter with Radeon R9 some months ago and its a huge improvment over OnBoard Video, i don`t expect it much slower 😳
