So I have this old X1950 Pro AGP that used to work. I don't remember what happened, but it stopped being stable.

It works with the standard vga driver from Windows. Once I install a Catalyst driver, it freezes consistently, and then comes back with the "VPU Recover" error. And then freezes again.
It is not a cooling issue, card has a rather large Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 on it.

I don't think it is a driver issue, but just in case, if there a preferred ATi driver for WinXP SP3 with this card? Only other though I have is baking the card in case the large heatsink twisted the PCB too much.

Maybe you need to change the thermal paste. Also check if the cooler is making proper contact with the chip underneath.
Also, use DDU or Driver Uninstall 2.7 to remove the older drivers and make a fresh install.
