Hi,

I attempt to build my old machine back to 98-00

I already had a Guillemot 3dfx voodoo 2 12mb reference last gen board and I want to make a SLI.

This card is perfect, smell like new and I own it since 98-00

The problem, for a second card, they are high price and rare.

I bought 2 of them at different time different seller, in Europe and both seems to not work.

The first card I bought is a 12mb reference late board (tantalum capacitor near the SLI connector)
The seller said tested it and show windows show 3dfx in device manager...
This card is very dirty and corroded solder on memory chip area (especially on smd caps, resistors)
The picture was not look that worst ;/

The second card I bought is a more early reference version procomp 12mb... this card was very dirty but not corroded.
I asked the seller to properly test it before send but it seems do exact same thing ;/

My original card work perfectly, unreal, rollcage, 3dmark, never crash in hours of play

When I put one of the 2 other card alone one a time, both card Win98 see it in device manager and properly install, driver say it's ok, no problem, but I can't launch a game or 3d mode 3dmark. they even can't launch 3dfx graphic property right click)
And we know that SLI not work either, haha! 🙁

I'm very unhappy and I spend 250$ (2x 125$) for the 2 card. I not bought the cleanest as they can sell for 200-250$ a card ;/

I noticed that both card had 3-5 brocken capacitor. I guess it can be important and not?
I have good skills to repair electronic and tools but how to know SMD capacitor value?
(some have experience for repair this? )

Wow they look bad, I wonder what happened that could ripped these caps off. Perhaps you could compare the 2 cards to find out the values? Assuming they are identical that is.

Slow down your CPU with CPUSPD for DOS retro gaming.

yes, I guess that too, I can compare them but SMD capacitor are difficult to check as I think I may need to remove them to check the value ?

All the last videocard I bought had brocken caps/resistor
I bought a radeon 9700 agp that have brocken cap at surround of the cpu on the ATI die (those are extreme small)
but this card works, but up to... 102 fsb or 68 mhz at agp, haha (we forget use it in a 440bx at 133Mhz... )

Recycling center are bad on video card, they throw them in large bin... it can rain/snow over them

You'll need an LC/ESR meter to measure the values, they can work in circuit most of the time. SMD caps are unmarked most of the time unfortunately. Some multimeters can measure capacitance too.

Yes, I have an old 90's multimeter with cap measurement, it not look to work on this, I do search for color code or something

Also, I would want know if it worth push a lot of work in this, some had good experience?
(Capacitor is for filtering, can do somethigng or not it's parallel to the circuit, a missing resistor would more dramatic as it in serial I think)...
