Is there any reason at all for me to keep PCI S3 Trio32 or Trio64 video cards when I also have PCI S3 Virge video cards?
Do the older cards have better compatibility or anything like that?

The 2D core should be the same, but Trio cards may have a slightly sharper 2D image, at least in my experience.
This could be due to the manufacturer though.
Ok. I'll end up testing them all anyway. I have a bunch of different ones so it wouldn't surprise me at all that some have better output than others.
I can't really think of a reason to use a Trio over a Virge if you have both.
Maybe useful to harvest the memory to upgrade other cards (Yeh I don't like doing this either but options are limited these days)
I'd let them go if your trying to clear out excess stock.

Better performance maybe. Some original S3 Trio64 cards are very fast and can beat any typical "noname" Virge card. For example, I've recenty acquired ExpertColor DSP-3364P which is clocked at 70Mhz and it shows.
I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.
Yep. Consider that the added value of the Virge was 3D acceleration and that S3D was not well supported and performed awfully...
Certainly in DOS both should perform identically at same core & RAM clocks, so whoever has higher clock should win.

Higher clocked Trio64 will perform better in Windows too. Although I know one interesting exception, which is probably tied to difference between memory bank limit of Trio64 and Virge.

I would keep the good brand ones.
I have a good collection of S3 Diamonds cards:Vision, Trio 64/+, DX, GX2 AGP, SV4 pro LT AGP, SV4 pro pci, SV2000.
I really wanted the ISA and VLB cards.
Retro rig 1: Asus CUV4X, VIA c3 800, Voodoo Banshee (Diamond fusion) and SB32 ct3670.
Retro rig 2: Intel DX2 66, SB16 Ct1740 and Cirrus Logic VLB.
