Greetings,

I scored a Voodoo 5 5500 for 1980-2000 box (was 1980-1999 with a Voodoo 3.) I am running MS-DOS 7.1, WFW 3.11, and Windows 98SE. I see that there are drivers for Voodoo 3 under Win 3.x. Do they work with Voodoo 5? Are there any drivers that will provide some semblance of support for the Voodoo 5 under Win 3.x? If not and I use the patched SVGA driver, what effects will I notice with the lack of GDI acceleration?

Thanks!

Voodoo 5 5500.
Best driver for 98se is Amiga Merlin 2.9 on 3dfxzone.it
Games with Glide support vary for the voodoo 5 5500, most games work, others just don't recognize the card. Old MSDos games pre 1998 dont support this 3dfx card for 3dfx.
Otherwise, Its the fastest 3dfx card available on the 2nd hand market.

Builds:

Xp3000+ gf3 ti200 + vd2 SLI 12MB + 768MB + SB live @ WinXP & 98 Dualboot.

P2 350mhz + Diamond Viper V550 + 3Dfx Voodoo 2 12MB + AWE64 + 128MB SDR @ msdos / win98.

Thank you, I will check it out. Are there drivers for Windows 3.x support?

Hi, there are no drivers available for Win 3.x
You can use the generic svga driver for a resolution with max 256 colors (and if I remember correctly max resolution 640x480) but you won't have any kind of GUI acceleration

Thank you. Is there a noticeable difference with a lack of GUI acceleration?

I can't give you direct information (never used a V5500 with Win 3.x).
I used the generic driver that I suggested with a matrox g450 pci and I did not notice any particular differences with a matrox millennium 2 pci installed with its driver for Win 3.x (with resolution 640x480x256-colors)
The system was based on Amd 5x86 133mhz on Tomato Zida 4dps with ms-dos 6.22 installed
I assume that between the computing power of the cpu and the performance of the video card (memory speed, DAC), it doesn't matter to have a specific driver for GUI acceleration

Thank you. It seems that using the SVGA driver patch with a Voodoo5 on a P-III 550 should allow for a decent Windows 3.x experience.
