truform is really cool but it's cursed. i still remember how the counterstrike guns looked

Eh, no. You just need to set flags for models to prevent that from happening. But practically nobody bothered with that though, because TruForm died very quickly.

I think the answer on how to wrap truform to General hardware opengl is here
http://alex.vlachos.com/graphics/NPatchViewer.zip
download it and you will see this Opengl app working on any hardware, demonstarating ati truform < source code exist in same archive

the other idea comes to mind is - > drivers on later radeons that support truform in software tesselation probably have full truform implementation inside, so its not needed the real hardware capabilities.
If somehow truform software tesselation code can be extracted from driver pack, hmm...

The GOG version of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 seems to have no effect with dgvoodoo wip80.1 Videocard ATI Radeon 8500 and setting its registry setting for Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Crystal Dynamics\Soul Reaver 2\1.00.000\UseNPatches = 1.
GOG version of Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2 has its own registry setting UseNPatches as well, also no effect.
GOG version of Legacy of Kain: Defiance no longer has registry setting UseNPatches.

OpenGL on real hardware only.
The RTCW has some bugs on 8500, probably it can run on x550 , not sure, i think source code need to be fixed and recompiled to restore ati truform support in 8500.

I see, I tried it on Radeon X800 before and it worked after the patch. But the games is really janky to get Truform to work, most of the time it won't work at all. And the changes are small, with big performance hit. Its easy to know Truform works when framerate dips a lot in certain area.

I don't know what TruForm would look like in RTCW, but the RTCW remastering mod project, RealRTCW probably makes it unnecessary with the replacement/remastering of the graphics assets. From what little is out there, TruForm was very buggy with RTCW - worked fine with some objects while others were visually corrupted or improperly rendered - and the Q3 engine just never got it working properly for the small amount of time it was available to GPU owners.

In RTCW I think it tessellates character models a bit because the more of them in view the greater the performance hit. As usual it's hard to notice without screenshot comparisons. The performance hit is noticeable however. 8500 thru X850 work up to Catalyst 5.8 but I think 5.8 has especially slow software truform on non-R200 cards.

Interesting. What's the best Cat version for trufrom in your opinion?

Things going slow , i need help.
in my first post there is remarks = "untested" if someone can help to test game(s) (prefer OpenGL now) please do.
Report how you activated it.
If you find additional TruForm supported games please mention it here too.

According to "OpenGL Extensions Viewer 4.1.2"
Video cards that supports ATI TruForm should be these: (keep in mind that this is not confirmed !!!! )
supports "GL_ATI_pn_triangles":
aTI Radeon 8500
Fire GL 8x00
MOBILITY FIREGL T2e
RADEON 8500
RADEON 9000
RADEON 9100
RADEON 9200
RADEON 9600
RADEON 9700
RADEON X600
RADEON X800
RADEON X850
RV250

supports "GL_ATIX_pn_triangles":
ATI Radeon 8500
ATI Radeon X1900
ATI Radeon X600
NVIDIA GeForce 6600
NVIDIA GeForce 7600
NVIDIA GeForce 7800
RAGE 128

About "GL_ATIX_pn_triangles" - a less amount of OpenGL games check this extension but that is trivial to fix any game (in theory) to force it work on hardware that only reports "GL_ATIX_pn_triangles" or vice versa
About "NVIDIA GeForce" - i somewhere seen that some NVidias can support it, but it not confirmed!!!
About RAGE 128 its old video card , i doubt it can support it.

I really remember ATI Radeon x550 supports ATI TruForm too.

by that any Radeon statring from 8500 and ending at X1900 should support TruForm (but its only in theory, need to be tested)

The Direct3D games now can be played With ATI TruForm technology by using dgVoodoo2

TRUFORM MD2/MD3-Viewer […]
Show full quote

TRUFORM MD2/MD3-Viewer

ATI’s TRUFORM gets nowadays used by some gaming titles to enhance the quality of the playermodels. To see this effect outside of a game I wrote this little viewer for MD2 (Quake2) and MD3 (Quake3) models that enhances those models with TRUFORM. Especially the low-on-poly Quake2-models profit heavy from this hardwarefeature as you can see in the screenshot. Note: This won’t work on current gen GPUs (even from AMD).

TRUFORM

A simple demo that shows how easy it is to tesselate a low-polygon mesh with the GL_ATI_pn_triangles-Extension (also known as TRUFORM) in hardware. The sphere shown in the screenshot only consists of a few vertices and gets tesselated using TRUFORM with only two lines of sourcecode. To use this demo you’ll need a graphicscard that supports TRUFORM. The following chipsets support it at the moment : Radeon8500, 9500/9600/9700/9800. Note: This won’t work on current gen GPUs (even from AMD).

The just released RTCW mod of ET, for single-player use, has a TruForm setting in the system options. I don't have an appropriate card to test, so I can't comment on how well it works.
