Of course if you have bad close up vision you could just use your eyes' built in anti-aliasing by not wearing glasses or contacts.

Most developers were aware of this when developing on consoles at the time. Even certain CGA games did use it for additional colors instead of the usual ugly ones but the text does indeed get unreadable.

Anyway I don't even recommend using a CRT TV for later computers especially for low-resolution stuff.
