Every time I try to run a screensaver I get an error message that says:

The program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
[Insert screensaver name] caused an invalid page fault in

It's been a long time since I've dealt with screensavers, probably 20yrs but I thought the ones includes with Windows relied on OpenGL.
You could try uninstalling the video drivers (or renaming the nvidia OGL ICD) and seeing if the screensavers still work if so they likely defaulted to software opengl.

I would use a much earlier driver with Win98. The 56.64 is the first one to officially support the 5500, but you can use 43.45 if you force install the driver and choose the 5200 Ultra. The 45.23 is a popular choice.
