I am having a strange issue where if I go into MSDOS mode and play a game that has high res graphics, (like Fable 1997 and Noctropolis) when I exit MSDOS Mode the PC hangs at a black screen and then rebooting I get this error.

There is a problem with your display settings. The adapter type is incorrect, or the current settings do not work with your hardware.

After this it is like my video drivers are not installed and I have to reinstall them.

Everything runs fine until I need to exit MSDOS mode. All other games I have tried exit like normal.
I am using the MSDOS Mode config from Phils Computer Lab.

I am running a 3dfx VooDoo 4 4500 PCI on a Socket 7 FIC PA-2500 with VIA chipset. P233MMX CPU. Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold.

Any idea what is causing this or how to fix it?
