List of Glide only games

The purpose of this thread is to identify games which only provide 3D acceleration using Glide, and cannot use any other API for that purpose. The games can of course support software rendering, DirectDraw, WinG and other 2D APIs. However, this list will not include games which support any other API which provides 3D acceleration. This means the games listed here cannot support Direct3D, OpenGL, ATi CIF, S3D, S3 Metal, Matrox MSI, PowerVR SGL, Rendition Speedy3D, CGL, NVLib and so on.

Additionally, if the retail version of a game only had Glide support, but then one of the official patches added Direct3D, OpenGL or any other 3D acceleration support, it does not qualify for this list. Lastly, any third-party fixes or mods made by fans will not be covered by this list. It only refers to retail CD releases of games, which may also use any official patches made by the original developers.

I have seen a couple of threads on this subject here and also here, but they haven't been updated in quite some time. Still, the findings presented there can be used as a starting point. However, every game which makes it onto this list will need to be tested and verified as being Glide exclusive. The final goal is to post this list on the Vogons wiki for easy access.

What about games that technically supported other APIs but which were inferior to Glide in either performance or rendering, meaning Glide is the only true way to experience the game?

While I do see the benefit of identifying such games, that is beyond the scope of this thread. Maybe a new one can be created for that purpose. There have been some prior attempts here but that thread is also quite old.

That said, I have recently discovered at least three games which have extra effects in Glide mode, despite supporting other APIs. They are European Air War, Need For Speed 3 and Carmageddon 2. You can see screenshots of the last two in this post but I don't think I've made a similar comparison for EAW.

Croc v1.0 supports S3 3D, ATI CIF, & MSI, and Croc v2.0 drops all support for prior APIs, but adds Direct3D. https://gona.mactar.hu/3D/

Need for speed II SE
Glide only. Must be SE; original has no hardware 3D.

NHL ‘98
Glide only. No versions prior support hardware 3D, and all versions forward support some other APIs in addition to Glide up to version 2002.

Thank you! I've removed Croc from the preliminary list and added NHL '98 to the confirmed list.

BTW, if anyone else can go through the preliminary list and verify some of those games, I will gladly add them to the confirmed list as well.

Pył (1999), an obscure game that only supports Glide for 3D acceleration. Archimedean Dynasty (1996) and Gunmetal (1998) are other examples.

The 3dfx version of both Blood and Shadow Warrior don't support voxels and aren't properly hardware-accelerated. Why do people still insist in those versions?

Adde those, thanks!

They are listed here for completeness sake. It is indeed known that those two games don't look so great in Glide mode.

I like this idea
Maybe better suited for vogonswiki but once we have this list and combine with the V2 compatibility matrix and glide games in general it would make for the ultimate one stop glide reference table.
(and could add a notes section for things like the "extra effects" games)

I've gone though vetz awesome non glide list 3D Accelerated Games List (Proprietary APIs - No 3DFX/Direct3D) and we can debunk

ATI Rage (ATI CIF)
Croc - Retail release (only 1.0 version)

Rendition Verite
EuroFighter 2000 (EF2000) TACTCOM - Expansion pack to EF2000 only released in Europe. Patchavailable for 3DFX and Rendition support.
EuroFighter 2000 (EF2000) v2.0 - Retail release support. This is bundle of EF2000 and the expansion TACTCOM with the patches applied released in the US Rendition support

S3 Virge (S3D)
FX Fighter Turbo - Retail release

3D Blaster CGL
Screamer II - Patch available for retail release.
Screamer Rally - Retail release.

Extreme Assault is Glide only. I just installed it. The last patch 1.2.3 adds Voodoo2 support and actually goes as far as deleting the previously installed GLIDE2X.OVL out of the install directory once applied! XA_3DFX.EXE is the Glide version, and XA.EXE is the non-accelerated version.

I think Asghan was Software and 3Dfx only. Same company (Silmarils) did a fighting game around the same time that I'm also rather sure was the same deal.

Anybody remember if Excalibur 2555 A.D. had a D3D path? I know it had two software renderers (one was MMX exclusive!) and a 3Dfx Glide Renderer, but I can't recall if it had D3D support.

GTA 1 also has a Glide accelerated renderer, not that it really helps or looks any better. It's essentially a bilinear filter on a game that's entirely CPU limited AFAIR.

Thanks guys!

Moved Extreme Assault and GTA 1 to the confirmed list. Added Excalibur 2555 A.D. and Asghan to the preliminary list, until we get full verification.

You'll probably want to merge Red Baron II with Red Baron 3D as the latter's a patched rerelease of the former (which didn't have any 3d accel to begin with and was infamous for that, and bugs).

as for the exclusive list... Streets of Simcity 😀 The Voodoo Rush patch also fixes it to work on Banshee/V3. Speaking of Rush and Banshee, San Francisco Rush The Rock, exclusive Glide OEM game for some banshee card I forgot. Was never available separately as far as I know. The original arcade's 3dfx powered as well so it should be a well done conversion.

Similarly, here's an odd exclusive stretch: the very specific Unreal 222r version bundled with Voodoo3 rips out every other renderer that isn't GlideDrv. JUST that version. The old UT 322 demo did similar (3dfx promoting special 3dfx demo). The normal initial retail releases of these supported other APIs (OG Unreal also had SGL)

While interesting, such releases fall under the "patched game has other APIs" category, assuming that this bundled version can be patched of course.
