Decided to check Carmageddon. Originally it didn't come with Glide support out of the box, it debuted with Splat Pack. For the original release, a patch came to include Glide support afterwards.

Although the game has a Windows version, that one only uses DirectDraw for rendering.

I've installed:

The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard - During setup, you can choose Software (no acceleration) or 3dfx (Glide). There are two executables: Rg.exe and Rgfx.exe - No DirectX options.

Sentinel Returns - There are 2 DLL option calls when the game executes - one is H3DeviceSoftware8Bit.dll and the other is H3Device3Dfx.dll. When DirectX is completely disabled, the game goes haywire (I'm guessing CPU is too fast), but it works. With DirectDraw enabled and Direct3D disabled, the game runs fine as does Glide - No Direct3D.

Asghan: The Dragon Slayer - Supports Glide, Software, and Direct3D in three separate EXE's. If Direct3D is disabled and the D3D executable is run, the game complains of no hardware acceleration - This game can be removed from the list.

I'm a bit confused about this one. Does it have a Direct3D mode which doesn't work (leaving only Glide) or is there no Direct3D support at all?

I’m sorry about the muddy message.

No Direct3D hardware acceleration is available. DirectDraw, Software, and Glide only.

Thanks!

You mentioned turning off Direct3D. I didn't get that the first time, but I assume you meant that you disabled Direct3D acceleration via dxdiag.exe in order to double check if it was used by the game? If so, that's some very thorough testing, but I don't think you need to go that far, if a game specifically states that it's using Glide. 😀 Usually, it's enough to see the 3DFX logo spin up before rendering occurs, if that option is enabled in the drivers of course.

Winglide + GDI/ddraw:

  • Apache Longbow (the Frontline Fighters version). DOS + software + winglide. The original version is DOS + software + unofficial winglide patch.
  • Curse You! Red Baron.
  • F-16: Fighting Falcon. DOS + software + winglide (the Frontline Fighters version). There is the official 3dfx patch for the original DOS + software version. But I not have this CD so can't test this patch.
  • F-16: Multirole Fighter.
  • F/A-18: Korea.
  • Fatal Abyss.
  • Fighter Pilot.
  • Gunmetal. DOS + dosglide + software + winglide.
  • Hind (the Frontline Fighters version). DOS + software + winglide. The original version is DOS + software + unofficial winglide patch.
  • I-War. Software + winglide patch.
  • Ignition. DOS + software + winglide patch.
  • Incubation: Battle Isle Phase Four.
  • Jane's Longbow Gold. DOS + software + winglide patch. The patch converts the software version to the glide one so the result is DOS + winglide.
  • Joint Strike Fighter.
  • Manx TT Superbike.
  • Mig-29: Fulcrum.
  • Montezuma's Return.
  • Nascar Craftsman Truck Series Racing.
  • NBA Live 98.
  • Need for Speed II Special Edition.
  • NHL 98.
  • Nuclear Strike.

Winglide + GDI/ddraw + CIF/MSI/S3D/RRedline/SGL:

  • Hardcore 4x4. Supports SGL.
  • Grand Prix Legends. Supports RRl. There is the OGL renderer but it's unofficial.
  • Myth: the Fallen Lords. Supports RRl.

Not sure:

  • Croc: Legend of the Gobbos. Software + winglide. Supports CIF, MSI and S3D. There is the d3d-only re-release.
  • Descent. DOS + winglide patch but the patch is unofficial.
  • Gex: Enter the Gecko. There are glide-only EU version and d3d-only US version with the winglide patch.
  • Mall Mania. Software + winglide. There is DRIVERS\gxopengl.dll (the opengl renderer?). But no "opengl" in game options.
  • Nascar Racing 1999 Edition. DOS + dosglide + software + winglide. Speedy3d support?

My "others API" list for winglide games is currently on the "P" letter (216/353 titles, 61.19%).

Centipede.

I've tested this game a while ago, and it has an official patch which adds Direct3D support. I think I got it from Fileplanet.

I'm actually not playing the games at all in Glide!, haha. If I see the 3dfx EXE or related, that's enough for me. But for DirectX, I need to be sure Direct3D is not being used, and I'm doing my best to ensure you don't receive incorrect information.

I see. Well, no worries, that approach works fine for the purposes of identifying Glide only games. If the game advertises Glide support and doesn't run with 3D acceleration on non-3DFX hardware, then that's a pretty decent indicator that it's primarily focused on Glide.

Just make sure to check the game's documentation (readme files, manual, technical support FAQ etc.) to see if any other APIs are mentioned. Also, you might want to check places like www.patches-scrolls.de for any potential updates which may add support for other renderers.

Yep, I'm already checking documentation and both PCGamingWiki and Patch Scrolls (old and new sites). I'm starting from the premise the game supports more than Glide and eliminating APIs as I go forward, which usually doesn't take long. Direct3D is the only step taking some time. Besides, I get to explore games I haven't played. I've added a few to the list I will buy (like Ignition, Nuclear Strike, and ManxTT Superbike, for example).

Looks like Hardcore 4x4 not shows the PowerVR choice in the "screen resolution" menu if a compatible hardware was't detected. So this API was missed in my list. *Censored*.
@Putas and @leileilol: tnx.

Jane's Longbow Gold has a DirectDraw version

That's a 2D API so it's fine.

Read the first post to see what kind of Glide exclusivity we're looking for.

I've installed:

Montezuma's Return - Glide only. DirectX can be completely disabled, and the non-hardware accelerated version runs fine (except CPU too fast).
Fatal Abyss - Glide only. DirectX can be completely disabled, and the non-hardware accelerated version runs fine.

Test Drive: Off-Road 2 - Glide only. DirectX can be completely disabled, and the non-hardware accelerated version runs fine. You can choose to install the 3dfx (enhanced) or standard (software) version during setup.
