Hiya!

Ok so basically I'm looking for a simple step by step guide how to modify a Nvidia driver to make it work with fx 5500 and fx5900xt.

I searched the forums but i can't for the love of me work this out.

I want driver 45.23 for windows 98 to work with these two cards and i tried to copy the info from [strings] and [mfg] from a newer driver (56.64 for fx5500) and 53.04 for 5900xt.

But it won't work using the setup.

Tried using the device Manager and then select the my modified 45.23 and yay it sees the fx5500 but then proceeds to ask for a Nvidia disk 1.

Can some kind soul please give me an easy guide on how to make this work?

Best regards!

You don't need that. Just manually set them as FX5200 and FX5900.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

But a 5900 has higher core and memory clocks than a 5900xt.
Wouldn't you need to manually lower the clocks afterwards?

No, the clock frequencies are stored in the video BIOS.

It won't work from setup.

Go to: Device Manager > Display Adapters > Standard Display Adapter > Properties > Driver > Update Driver > Next > Display a list of all drivers in a specific location > Have Disk > point to modified driver folder.

Thank you 🙂
I did this yesterday on the fx5500 and it found it in the list.
It's odd however that when opening the Nvidia panel it says unknown instead of the graphic cards name.
I this normal or did i do something wrong?

It's just what happens when modified drivers are used.

I asked about that myself a while ago and got the same answer. It can't be fixed, but it doesn't affect anything either, and is considered merely a cosmetic issue.

Thank you for the quick reply 🙂

My 5900xt just arrived today and i got myself a arctic silencer 3 cooler for it.

Seems like the memory heatsinks might be glued on this xfx 5900xt...
Hmm i wonder how i can remove them without hurting it.
Gonna be fun to compare it's performance against the Quadro fx 3000.

The difference probably won't be that big.
Half life,Heretic II and Drakan among a few others will most likely run just like they did before.
