Does the S3 86C805, when equipped with the requisite 2MB, allow NON INTERLACED 1024x768 high color modes?

There are 9000 threads on here telling you not to waste time upgrading your Cirrus CL-GD542X cards to 2MB, but curiously nothing I can find on the equally popular S3 card

I think the "waste of time" advice is to do with performance only, especially in Dos there is no point going from 1MB to 2MB with either card.
For Windows You will get better colour depth, that's all.

PC's from XT 8088, 486, Pentium MMX, K6, Athlon, P3, P4, 775, to current Ryzen 5600x.

^ I think that's what maxtherabbit wants, higher resolution with 16-bit color depth. Obviously, it isn't that useful in DOS outside of non-gaming applications.

Correct. The Cirrus can only do 1024x768p in 256 color. Even with the memory upgrade, 64k color forces interlaced mode, which is beyond useless in my opinion.

Was wondering if the S3 faired any better in this regard

Back in the days 805 was common cheap chipset for low-to-medium performance in Windows. Today I would use some other S3 chipset for Windows usage. Like not too expensive Vision864.

Requests are also possible... /msg kixs

I got my hands on one of these and answered my own question - NO. The 2MB upgrade on these cards is equally as worthless as on the Cirrus. All it unlocks is more interlaced modes.
