Anyone else crazy enough to try this? It’s a slideshow on an AMD K6-3 @ 400Mhz. I thought it might have a chance as it pulls ~45fps in GLQuake and it’s packing 32MB of video memory. Has anyone else experimented with this card? I’m sure it would pull better numbers with a faster CPU. Here is someone claiming 40-80fps from 2008.

Okay number nine rev IV, check, ample bits for fast k6-3 or PII/III check, crazy, check... ready to go? bzzzt. Unfortunately "out of phase" for me at the moment, will watch with interest and try to join the party when I'm in late 90s/transmillenial builds.

.. though... I might be messing with a "side chick" Deskpro PIII 600 while I'm down in the dunge with the Blue lightning, will see if it will slide in there maybe.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Lol, let me know if it happens. I’ll try a faster rig and report back.

Quick update, I got it to a sort of playable state by using vertex lighting, also avoid using the plasma gun, this isn’t possible for your enemies though. Something with the transparent textures of the plasma and blood can bring it from 15-25fps down to 1-2 sec a frame. This is on the Q3DM1 map, the mirror on the first map also brings things to a grinding halt. Interesting stuff, N9 probably could have gotten these issues hammered out. Maybe a faster CPU or the AGP version would help.

I’m using the N9ICD-1.7 , which I believe is the latest.

The only reasons i'd think the plasma would cause the slowdown is that there's an issue with clamped textures, as the plasma ball's a sprite with texture clamping as well as the impact splash. Maybe the ICD's doing a terrible uprez to compensate for a possible lack of clamping, and thus thrashing. Otherwise it doesn't do anything out of the ordinary than what the other weapons do. (except maybe the BFG)

Just theorizing here, I don't have any #9 hardware - but it is an intriguing snag regardless.

EDIT: as an experiment i've made a simple replacement shader/texture for the two clamped plasma effects to be different non-clamped versions using a completely new texture cobbled up quickly (which has a huge margin to effectively behave like a clamped texture). Extract to baseq3 and find out if it's any better

Okay gave it a shot and no change, I’ve noticed it seems to be specifically the explosion of the plasma when it hits a surface and the closer you are to it that causes the slowdown. You can have plasma in air with no perf impact.
