I'd go for the lower clocked cards like the ti200 and ti4200 because they are less likely to die due to using less power and producing less heat. Also the prices are more reasonable. If a game is unplayable on a ti4200, the ti4600 is not going make a huge improvement.

Thanks for your input. That's a valid point. One I have not considered yet I have to admit. Running into a game that would not run on the lower-clocked card is rather unlikely in general. As I said I am mainly going to play games from 97 to late 2000. These games should run fine on Ti 200 or Ti 4200 because these games are older than the cards. It cannot be ruled out of course that I might get interested in replaying games from 2001 and 2002. If these games are not going to run well I can still lower the settings.
