Hi, I'm setting up for the first time 486DX33 with ATI Mach32 (EXM229) and Win 3.11 and having display issues I need help with.

When I start Windows Install, Windows recommends display driver 8514/a. With this driver selected, the display resolution is sized correctly, but screen has artefacts in the form of blank horizontal lines.

When I install ATI Mach32 Windows Driver version 2.6, the screen no longer has the blank horizontal lines, but is not sized correctly. The screen expands beyond the screen border and I can pan to it with mouse movement. This behavior persists regardless which resolution I choose in the ATI FlexDesk configuration utility.

Selecting other generic VGA driver modes in the Windows configuration utility results in the same behavior as when using ATI Mach32 driver.

Going to DOS and trying to test the card with ATI Mach32 Test.exe utility version 2.6, the screen looks perfect at 640x480 but at 1024x768 has artefacts in the form of blank horizontal lines. I also run the various diagnostic tests in the test.exe tool, and everything passed.

Need help how to fix. Thank you.

Aren't there ATI DOS tools where you can setup the proper size and alignment and refresh rate of the different display resolutions?
Can you try different settings and alignments there?

Isn't 1024x768 configured for interlace?
Run INSTALL.EXE and set all resolutions to non-interlaced, the settings should be saved to EEPROM.

I run the install.exe, but can't find where to configure resolutions. Attaching photos of the options I see.

Also attaching screenshot of ATI Sys Info utility. It shows installed modes. I'm not sure what exactly these are for. If I don't see other resolutions does it mean the card doesn't support them?

I think under "Set Power-Up Configuration" should be the option to set monitor type/custom parameters...

I see these options. But this seems to me like something that would change the default resolution of the card upon boot vs configuring it for optional resolutions that could be selected in Windows.

If I try this and this doesn't work, how do I recover? Assuming this gets written to EEPROM I may not have an easy way to go back.

That depends on what kind of monitor you want to use the graphics card. If your LCD does not support 75 Hz, choose a 60 Hz setting. Most LCDs support 60 an 75 Hz, but some may make troubles at 56, 70 or 72 Hz, or the interlaced modes.
I'd try either NEC 4D 1024x768 60 Hz or VESA 1280x1024 75 Hz and setup the display modes after that.

Well, just saw the following in the readme file. I'll try to follow it.

- New VESA 75Hz Refresh Modes:

ATI has adopted the 75Hz vertical refresh rate modes which have been
recently standardized by the Video Electronics Standards Association
(VESA). Where applicable, these new modes will replace the previous
76Hz modes at 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768 and the 74Hz mode at
1280x1024.

In addition, new 90Hz and 100Hz modes are now supported on 2MB VRAM
mach32 graphics cards. To access these new modes, use the following
procedure:

To access any of these modes, use the following steps:

1. Run the "INSTALL" program by inserting Disk #1 of the supplied mach32
disks into the appropriate disk drive and run the INSTALL program.
2. From the Main Selection Menu, select Set Power-Up Configuration
3. Under the Set Power-Up Configuration menu, select Monitor Type
4. Under the Monitor Type menu, select either:
VESA standard 75Hz
High-Refresh 90Hz
High-Refresh 100Hz

Note: 90Hz and 100Hz selections apply only to current 2MB VRAM mach32
graphics cards. Refer to the attached Mode Tables for supported
resolutions and color depths.

5. Save your monitor selection by pressing <F10>
6. From the Main Selection Menu, re-select Set Power-Up Configuration
7. Under the Set Power-Up Configuration menu, select Monitor Type
8. Under the Monitor Type menu, select the Custom... option
9. For each resolution, you must specify the vertical refresh rate.
You will notice that the refresh rate which you have specified in
step 4 will now be listed as an option, if it is available at that
resolution.

WARNING! If the box outline in the Adjustment Screen becomes scrambled,
press < Esc > immediately to exit, then try a lower refresh rate.

Dual PPro/200, Millennium II, Voodoo 2, AWE32, SC-55
etc.

Making progress. I tried the VESA 1280x1024 75 Hz and then configured individual resolutions based on what my monitor supports. Everything works now, except the installer won't give me option for 1280x1024 at 60 or 75 Hz. It only offers 87Hz Interlaced and 95Hz Interlaced. I assume this means my card doesn't support non-interlaced 1280x1024 ?

Also, does anyone know how I can configure refresh rate in Windows 3.11. It seems that Windows simply picks the highest supported refresh rate. The ATI Windows utility doesn't seem to provide any options for it, only resolution selection.

Btw, here's how the card is configured now:

I would set all modes to 60 Hz, I don't think there's any benefit from higher refresh rates on an LCD monitor.
