Another Voodoo 2 SLI bridge

I've had some inspiration after reviving a pair of Voodoo2 cards! I've made a temporary floppy ribbon SLI, but since my retro machine will be open, I thought a cool SLI bridge is in order.

I'm aware of the others available, but I thought I'd give it a shot! I'm not going to have rainbow LEDs on my case or anything, but a simple red-illuminated SLI bridge just sounds freaking awesome to me. The mask and copper will be left out and I'm going with a reasonably thin PCB to allow for the red LEDs to glow!

Going to put in an order tonight for these... What do you all think? Cool or dumb! 🤪

Would be cool if I could power it off the SLI pins, but I'm not sure about the pinout and don't know if there's power there. A simple JST header will supply 12v.

Here is, few days ago I made one and it works perfectly with two v2 where 1st has 8MB and 2nd has 12MB: http://vogonswiki.com/index.php/How_to_make_a … doo_2_SLI_cable
The smaller one waits for ram mod, there is place on pcb for 8 extra chips.

my repairs: mobo index :: vga index :: requests

Thx but I've already made a ribbon for it! I actually followed that pic in fact! 😋

Is there a wiring pinout for these bridges somewhere? I'm having trouble finding one.

Check my post here: 3Dfx Voodoo 2 PCB SLI Bridge / SLI Cable

I did see that post, but I looked again and found the PCB file with a pinout! Thx for referring me back to that. I'll have to make those simple changes!

Personally I don't like the red. I'd go with Green to match the cards but that's just personal taste.
but anything that shows off the awesomeness is SLI is cool IMHO

Like many I made my own cable many years ago from a floppy cable and I wouldn't mind having a PCB but the actual SLI connectors aren't perfectly aligned on my two cards.

Both are the same model too.

Okay hear me out... I'd really like to put some fans on these guys cus they get pretty hot...

This is my solution to hold 2 x 40mm by 10mm fans top mounted... Thumbs up or thumbs down?

I like it, but wouldn't it only cool one card properly? Maybe expand the outline to have another fan on the other side do the one card as well, so both are cooled on the gpu side? I know this could give clearance problems with adjacent cards, though.

Please use the "quote" option if asking questions to what I write - it will really up the chances of me noticing 😀

As above, that airflow is only going to hit the front side of the first card. If you went bigger to get the front and back of both cards I think you could be really pushing the amount of mass you can hang off those SLI connectors?

So with the 40mm fans, there should be air coverage for both cards. This layout is more symmetrical, but if I shift the fans over by 10mm, they would both have even coverage. This would put the center line right in the middle of the PCB. I'm also adding heatsinks to my chips so even a little airflow would work.

I was looking 3 fans long, but at nearly 90-100mm span from center to center, two fans would be more than enough I think. And you're totally! This would limit the card heights of nearby cards. If I shift 10mm down, it would only affect the cards lower on the PCI slots and be out of the way from the upper PCI slots.

Okay, this is an asymmetrical version that puts the 40mm fan centered on the second VooDoo 2 PCB. This would give even airflow for both front ICs but would leave the back of the first PCB with no airflow like the symmetrical version. With only 40mm of span, I might prefer more airflow to the fronts. I think either would work out though and I wouldn't want bigger than 40mm...

Looks really cool! You could, however also go with one off-center and one centered, to have the best of both worlds 🤣

Alternatively a version with an extra card's spacing in between 😉

But yeah, won't make sense to have more versions fabricated ...

Okay... I'm way past my bedtime but I found a 3D model of a Voodoo 2 card here https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/videocard-3df … 4dcae4c0ed22479

The model was Blender to Fusion so it's all black with no texture. I'm so tired I don't care at the moment... But, it would look badass!

First, thx to @matze79 @sdz @Sphere478 and everyone who contributed to the post 3Dfx Voodoo 2 PCB SLI Bridge / SLI Cable about the PCB SLI bridge! I also wanted something special for my retro build and that post gave me some inspiration! Thank you!

The first test board worked and the simple backlight worked like a charm! The pictures are crummy and I'll do a better one once the other test board comes.

This is the first ver but I've changed the silkscreen "VOODOO2" to be a mask layer relief so it will be metallic. This was also a "bad" trace route and decided to go with a ground plan with the second version. This was just a test PCB of course.
