Trident cards were the shit.
Literally.
lo
I think an OAK technology VGA deccelerator would make a Trident
look pretty slick.
Not sure about REALTEK VGA, sounds a bit modern to me 😀
Cya
What's wrong with trident? They were sluggish, but compatible. The only game I could not get to run on a 386 with Trident 9000 was Digger.
I had a trident in my 486 and n3ver had a priblem with it. It was probably slower than a lot of other cards but it worked fine.
If you are squeamish, don't prod the beach rubble.
Just like you said, they were very slow cards. Every budget PC had those cards, at least here in Greece.
i remember Realtek 256KB VGA, it was incompatible with digger,
but it also came with utilies to set into hercules or CGA operating modes so Digger (or moonbugs) became playable again.
it also have program to reboot into CGA operating mode for booter games compatibility.
but i believe the color 6 (brown) are kinda weird.

OAK hands down.
Graphic decelerator 🤣
Hi
I threw out most of the old junk over 10 years ago but there are still
some bits hanging around. here I present some classics from the early '90s.
First a worthy challenger to the title of worst DOS VGA card, the TRIDENT:
My personal favourite, but this is their most advanced model by far from OAK:
Lastly, something that was designed for windows, the S3 accelerator:
Perhaps the S3 is even worse is DOS than the others?
BYE-BYE
Noooo, trident is crap? BUT THEY HAVE S-VIDEO OUT!!!! Anyway, yeah, even some of the original OEM AMD cards were better than an s3
Doom isn't just a game, it's an apocalypse survival simulator.
OAK 076 was way worse than my Trident 8900CL
(Or was it 078?)
Intel i7 5960X
Gigabye GA-X99-Gaming 5
8 GB DDR4 (2100)
8 GB GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming (Gigabyte)
I had a Trident VL Bus card in my DX2-80 system and never had a real issue. It was the only VGA card I ever owned back then, so I didn't really know any better until I got my Packard Bell Pentium 150 box and discovered games that required hardware 3D acceleration. 🤣
I wonder if Verite runs Doom slower than Oak.......

I will test those seriously hot cards posted earlier using the method here:
http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/misc/doomben … html#submission
but I don't have a VERITE card nor do I know if it's a good test or not.
More later.
Bye
Here are the results.
The OAK OTI087 is a top performer after all, the TRIDENT really is poor but
overall the S3 is the worst DOS performer. S3 really didn't care about DOS.
I used a fast computer to test these devices, I can't begin to imagine how
bad it would be trying to play with a slower CPU.
Bye-bye 😀

I suppose on a fast enough system Quake I doesn't behave any different.
In this list there is one OAK card (ITO037C like in Maulwurf's diagram) which is slower and two which are faster than a Verite V2200. The fastest ISA cards are 3 times as fast.
@Maulwurf: This confirms my opinion that the Paradise card we used in a 386 was an excellent performer. Doom was on the verge of being playable without reducing viewport/quality too much (386DX40).
🤣 yeah Verite is astonishingly slow with non VESA modes! I have always wondered why that compromise happened with both (!!) generations of Verite chips.
You should check out my Matrox Impression bench results I added to Phils Benchmark table. It is the P3 800 MHz that settles close to the 486DX2-66 systems (but mainly due to the Quake score).
