Hello, first of all I want to introduce myself, as I'm new to these forums. Just hope to share my obssesion with fellow DOS fans 😀

I wanted to share a little project, the PC/DOS mini:

cache.php?img=https%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2F5bz60BV.jpg

Using an old thinclient with a VIA chipset capable of emulating a Sound Blaster I created what would be the PC-DOS equivalent to the consoles compilations, the snes mini, psx mini, etc. Here is the list of the games included:

3-Demon
Abuse
Aladdin
Alien Breed: Tower Assault
Alien Carnage
Alien Rampage
Alone in the Dark
Angelo
Another World
Apache
Black Thorne
Blake Stone
Blood
Cannon Fodder
Carmaggedom
Catacomb Abyss 3d
CD-Man
Charlie the duck
Command & Conquer
Commander Keen
Commander Keen 4
Cool Spot
Cyberkid
Dark Forces
Death Rally
Demo: 4k World
Demo: 8088 Corruption
Demo: BB
Demo: Nyan cat

Hocus Pocus
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Indycar Racing 2
Jazz Jackrabbit
Jill of the Jungle
Lamborghini American Challenge
Lemmings
Line Wars 2
MDK
MegaMan X
Show last 45 lines
Monkey Island
Mortal Kombat 2
Need for Speed
One Must Fall 2097
Prince of Persia
Prince of Persia 2
Project X
Quake
Quarantine 2: Road Warrior
Radix
Raptor: The call of Shadows
Realms of Chaos

Sam & Max hit the road
Scorched Earth
Screamer 2
Shadow Warrior
Sim City
Sim City 2000
Speed haste
Street Racer
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo
Syndicate
Tennis Elbow
Terminal Velocity
The adventures of Captain Comic
The Chaos Engine
The Incredible Machine
The Lion King
Theme Hospital
Threat
Tie Fighter
Tomb Rider
Tools: Impulse Tracker
Tools: TopBench
Tyrian
Ultima Underworld
Virtual Pool
Wacky Wheels
Warcraft
Warcraft 2
Wolfenstein 3d
Worms
Z
Z.A.R.

And don't worry about legal issues, all software included is either free, shareware or demo 😀

Any motherboard with southbridge VIA VT82C686A/686B/VT8231 is compatible with this sound driver and should work without problems with it.

You can see here in action:

Also, if you don't have a compatible motherboard you can try the compilation on dosbox.

The HD image and the dosbox compilation can be downloaded here: http://vieju.net/pcdosmini/

I hope you like it 😀

This is a really great idea! It does show how unique, open ended, and fan-drive the PC is compared to consoles. It's also very niche, so you won't get too much interest or feedback, but it's a nice little project for hardcore PC fans, and if you develop the idea and software further then it might grow into something that will attract more users who will work on it even further, like MAME or the Raspberry Pi.

Neat project, I have a Via board that might be compatible. Where did you get the soundblaster drivers for it?

I commented on VCF but again, neat idea & thanks for putting it together. 😉

I have a question about your thin client - do you have the ISA/PCI slot riser? I would LOVE to know the pinout or even what it looks like. Can you post a pic if you have it?

Believe it or not, you can still download them direct from VIA, but they're kind of buried. I also attached them in the second post of this thread.

I think there's some Compaq laptops that have support for VIAFMTSR so maybe that could work with this too?

Anyway:
- Duke3D's and Shadow Warrior's play count could be reset to 0.
- no Speed Haste music?
- You should fix some titles, like "Tomb Rider"
- There's some high score residue left in there.
- I'm not sure if Lamborghini American Challenge is a demo or not
- no VGA "clover-inspired" frontend interface? 🙁

"Classic" demo suggestions:
- Battle Isle 2200
- ElfLand
- Extreme Assault
- Inner Worlds
- Jetpack
- Mechwarrior 2
- Liero
- Operation Carnage
- Skyroads
- Slix 'n Slide
- Tempest 2000
- Unreal (the demo)

DISCLOSURE: tested in PCem with on an Award 430VX + S3 ViRGE DX + SBPro2 IRQ5 DMA1 config, which is enough for commenting on the bundle aspect of the project.

Why to limit for games only? It can be also used for tracker music, and in a more modern way it should be good if having digital I/O and MIDI uart which works with FT2 versions.
So, the expansion possibilities are ISA bus? MIDI UART available?

Current project: DOS ISA soundcard with 24bit/96Khz digital I/O, SB16 compatible switchable.
newly made SB-clone ...with 24bit and AES/EBU... join in development!

Awesome project, I havent tried your disk image yet but I do have a few thin clients that should fit the bill. What exact model of thin client is pictured?

Check out DOSBox Distro:

a lightweight Linux distro (tinycore) which boots off a usb flash drive and goes straight to DOSBox.
