Hi, I am thinking in installing FreeDOS in a partition.
But perhaps DOS can't handle big RAM memories (I think I heard it)...
However, could this new FreeDOS use 496 MB of RAM?

Even if it can't, which is the command to modify the amount of RAM that DOS uses?

Thanks mates.

DOS only use 1MB (real mode addressing)
There are some protocols to allow DOS programmes to get more memory, it depend on HIMEM.SYS

Himem.sys must be load in config.sys:
DEVICE=C:\FDOS\BIN\HIMEM.SYS

The amount of memory detected depend on the version of himem.sys you use.
Some detect only 64MB, other can detect up to 4GB (max in 32 bit addressing)
64MB is large enought for dos, it's hard to find dos program who use more than 8MB and I can't find dos program who need more than 32MB

Makes me wonder: will the amount of detected memory cause incompatibility problems? (ie: certain DOS games won't run, etc)

See, such thing actually happen in Windows 98. When you're using Win98 with 512MB of RAM, Jane's Longbow 2 won't run unless you hack the registry to lower the amount of memory used by Windows.

Oh, I see.
Sorry, right now I can't search...in 5 minutes I have to leave for class 😀
But, could you tell me if to obtain those Himem.sys is it necessary to grab them from some Windows version, or on the internet are they "legally" downloadable?

See u dude!

Oh I see.
So, then, changing the number of RAM configured in that archive, it
should work, perhaps?? 😖

Oh sorry, another question: CD support is allowed since the beginning, in FreeDOS, right?

Thanks a lot
