I'm not sure if this is something that occurs with all of the old DOS Tsunami games (some of the best there are), but whenever a sound effect is not playing, independent of speech or movie audio, there is loud clicking. This isn't dependent on VDMSound: SoundFX exhibits the same behaviour.

Ideas on what's causing this, and possible workarounds or solutions?

Yes, it’s my fault.

DC offset. Use VDMSound to dump the audio to file, and open the .wav in an editor to see what the heck's going on. You'll probably see a sharp drop to 0 or something at the end of every sample. Reducing treble to minimum may alleviate the problem.
