Search is your friend, especially since this has been gone over about 1000 times before.

Get to fix System Shock:
attachment.php?s=&postid=10375

Then, get for mouse problems in SVGA: showthread.php?s=&threadid=1059

Yes, it’s my fault.

You run System Shock with the following command line:

MOUSE2KV.EXE 640 480 8 8 C:\PATH\TO\SSH-INSTALL-DIR\cdrom\dos4gw.exe C:\PATH\TO\SSH-INSTALL-DIR\cdrom\cdshock.exe

Where cdshock.exe is Mok's modified CDSHOCK XP?

Yes, it’s my fault.

Give us your system specifications (processor, memory, video card, etc...) as requested in the Posting Guidelines at the top of each forum.

Then, get back to the basics. Configure the game to run in low-resolution (320x200) without VDMSound and with no sound effects or music. Yes, I know...not fun. Does it appear to be stable if you run it this way? If not, does it crash after about the same amount of time during "normal" play?

I suspect that you simply might have a system that is "less tolerant" when it comes to memory. Mok's executable doesn't eliminate the memory problem, it just gives you more time between crashes. Having said that...it shouldn't be "a few seconds"...

Ok,

I tried many different dos4gw and it's seems work.

Well, It's always crash but not in few seconds... I can play a long time and save the game (if i think of it)...

If this is the "normal" way to playing SS1 on XP, so i thank you guys...

It does seem to work? or it does not seem to work?

Hard to tell, we need more detail.

Ok, Plenty of power and memory, capable audio and video. Even with the overhead of XP and any tools needed, you still have plenty of power left to run old DOS titles in a XP environment.

In that case, I'd say it's running as well as it possibly can. As I said before, it still has the memory problem the original game had, but Mok's executable makes the game much more stable. A few hours is obviously much better.

If I understand it correctly, the NTVDM within XP is completely isolated from the OS (a Virtual DOS Machine), so you should be able to bypass most crashes by saving your position, quitting the game, restarting the game, and loading your saved position every two hours.

Can't really tell you as I have yet to really play the game. I mostly test games, not play them.

One day, when we have stable protected-mode emulation in a tool like DosBox, we should be able to run it without crashes. Until then, using the save/quit/restart/reload method I described above, you should be able to enjoy the game in a fairly stable way.
