I am a packrat...I keep all my old software (among other things). I have a ton of old 3 1/2" and 5 1/4" floppies with my old gaming collection...the originals. Unfortunately, I've tried going through them and copying the data, or playing them directly from disk, but they seem to be unreadable.

I have read somewhere that this type of media breaks down after some number of years. Is there any solution to this problem - are all my old games gone forever? Or is there some way to recover data on these disks?

Thanks!

Well if you don't take care of them properly (enclosed spaces, away from dust), they will. Not all floppies have a set date of years - most of my 80s floppies still read 100% today.

Try an old PC with an old floppy drive and see if that makes a difference in reading the disks.
