gog.com are selling Descent 1 and 2 for 6 US $ download. That's a good price. I was wondering, does either Descent 1 or 2 have a Voodoo video option? Or maybe, does a voodoo patch exist?

Playing this on say an old Voodoo1 or 2 card would make this game/s sweeter IMHO.

Thank you.

It seems that Descent II has voodoo patches, but Descent I only has Verite and Virge patches. Also, there are ports that runs on DirectX and OpenGL.

I have traveled across the universe and through the years to find Her.

I'm selling some stuff!

i'd personally recommend the original retail Descent II since it doesn't have chopped up cd tracks (later editions reduce their times so interplay can fit some starfleet academy trailer swag on the disc)

There is a 3dfx Beta Patch at PlanetDescent.com (it's the first file in the Compatibility Patches section):

http://www.planetdescent.com/site/files/d1/patches/

I have successfully used this patch with a Voodoo5.

As Zup said, the port projects give you a lot of options:

D2X-XL
http://www.descent2.de/d2x.html

DXX
http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/

Also, if you decide to get the original Descent (from any source), this post might be helpful if you have issues with the music after Level 7:

Descent Version 1.5 Patch Fix

I have not heard anyone say whether or not this is an issue in the GOG release.

Say, will those work with the data files from the Macintosh versions of Descent I and II? (One of them was widely distributed in a PowerPC sampler pack back in the day.)

I don't know if that question is addressed in the downloads for the ports or not. It is probably best to see if the question has been answered in the port projects' forums:

http://www.descent2.de/forum/index.php

http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/smf/index.php

This thread does seem to address the question for the DXX ports:

What are your environmental variables?

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

I keep notes for applications to remind me how to get things working, particularly things I am liable to forget. Here is the relevant note for Descent:

When installing the game under Windows 98 SE, the third-party 3dfx patch can successfully be used to enable Glide support. Before applying the patch, the game must be patched to the latest version. In order to apply the patch, reduce the screen resolution to 640x480 and reduce the color to 8-bit beforehand. Application of the patch will result in high-speed bobbing of the ships in the game on a 933 MHz Pentium III machine, but this can be fixed with a slow-down program or application of anti-aliasing in the Voodoo controls. Brightness will probably need to be adjusted by some means.

Hope that helps.

oh GOSH! isn't it more authentic and wholesome to play the pixely-pure non-accelerated versions of these games!?!?!

And miss out on 3dfx's glorious burr-o-vision? 😉

You just reminded me of something - Shadow Warrior 3dfx version. 🤣

Some of the links in this thread no longer work. I can find game patches for for Descent I (one) for 1.0 - 1.5 out in the wild internet, but I can not find anything that suggests there was ever a 3D accelerator patch for S3, 3dfx, or other chips. I know that there are for Descent II, and I have found those.

Does anyone have these official or experiments patches for Descent I ? I would love to play with them on my old hardware.

Does Vogons keep an archive of files we can browse?

There were only one official 3D accelerated version of Descent, for the Nvidia Nv1 and it sucked (video). The 3DFX patch was released as a fan project in 1998.

Very easy to find the patch on Google: http://www.dfiles.de/download/d1/patches/d13dfxb1.exe

Thank you! When searching, I kept running into dead links for the patch files. Apparently your Google skills are stronger than mine 😉

That video really informative. Cleared up some fog for me. Thanks for the help!
