I am examining some of the older SQ games and wanted to know if there is supposed to be voice in SQ4? i read somewhere there was a talkie version. At this point, I have found mention of full voicing for only SQ6.

I had some trouble getting sound to work on SQ4, the version i have, which is the one from the collection of SQ 1-5. I tried using VDMS and got nothing. I added the patch i found here...

http://www.spacequest.net/sq4/fixes/

and got sound in the game, but the intro would not run and the Sierra logo had no music. Is there a special set up for VDMS for this game that anyone knows about? i just used the default config.

i found the sound resource file that has all the voice in it, and i confirmed that the CD version does indeed have voices...and narration...but i just cant get them to play using VDMS ...i foiund an old post here by someone who moved the ini file into a WIN folder and re did the bat file and ran it with VDMS successfully but i dont know how to re do the bat file....

so....i hope for some help if anyone knows what to do...

maybe it will work in DosBox...not sure..

any suggestions on these games and sound much appreciated.

ah ha, it works with DosBox, got the voices going, they are great. 😀 ah well, i guess VDMS just did not want to work with it....

i wonder if there is a way to adjust the music, it is quite basic..and a bit loud but i dont see any place to set volume for it.

Always try DOSBox, first. VDMS is a dead project. All of the Sierra SCI games are very easy to setup in DOSBox. You may wish to also try my Sierra game DOSBox installers. They install the games from their original media and automatically setup the games to run in DOSBox.

thanks for the replies,

collector i did know about your installers but there is none for Space Quest...not that i see on the page you gave link for. as it was Space Quest that i am working on or was yesterday i did not try them.

DOSBOX seems to work indeed, but i do prefer the ease of the start up option once you have VDMS installed and it ran Space Quest V fine, it is hit and miss with VDMS. if DosBox has a easy option by right clicking on the exe it might be a lot more popular, hving to set up each game with all the various lines of type is not always that much fun. But it does work which i appreciate.

GrisGer - VDMSound has no right-clicking feature. It is the accompanying LaunchPad that gives you that. Guess what? DOSBox has multiple 'launchpad' helpers available - all you have to do is to choose which one to use: http://frontends.dosbox.com

ChrisGer you can use a so called "frontend" to make your life with DOSBox much easier! A frontend is a Windows Gui, which allows you to configure the settings of DOSBox and give the commands automaticly through windows while on backround runs DOSBox normally. Try D-Fend Reloaded, it is a very good and supported one! Using one Frontend/Launcher for DOSBox you will enjoy all your clasic games withoun any major problems.
