Hi, I have a strange problem with my AWE64 in MS-DOS Mode (Win98).

Originally everything was working perfectly, but now I'm having issues with Midi
(and sometimes sound as well) in MS-DOS Mode. It's not an issue with all games
in MS-DOS mode, just certain games.

Examples:

Kings Quest 7: Sound is working, but MIDI has stopped working.
Highway Hunter: Same, Sound but no MIDI
Wolfenstein 3D: Sound and Midi has stopped working!
Darkseed: Sound but no MIDI

The strange thing is, Sound and MIDI both work perfectly in Duke Nukem 3D!

I've tried everything to fix this, I've even formatted the PC and reloaded the drivers
from the original CD.

Any Ideas why this would suddenly happen after working perfectly before?
...and what I could try to resolve this?

Thanks.

Content of the autoexec.bat and config.sys, please. And the CT number of your card.

Asus P4P800 SE/Pentium4 3.2E/2 Gb DDR400B,
Radeon HD3850 Agp (Sapphire), Catalyst 14.4 (XpProSp3).
Voodoo2 12 MB SLI, Win2k drivers 1.02.00 (XpProSp3).

Thanks for the reply. Details below:

It's a CT4380 AWE64 Value. I also have a CT4500 AWE64 Value,
which I want to use for another machine, but I can swop them out
if necessary.

AUTOEXEC.BAT

SET SOUND=C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\CTSND
SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E MODE:0
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H6 P300 E620 T6
@C:\LETASSIG\LETASSIG.EXE @LETTERS.INI /O:DRIVEMAP.DAT /CD
LH C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.EXE

CONFIG.SYS

LASTDRIVE=Z
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE

Are you boot in pure dos?.
It look like your missing dos device drivers
Check your DOSSTART.BAT in windows folder
which should have something like
C:\WINDOWS\CTCM
C:\SB16\DIAGNOSE /S
C:\SB16\MIXERSET /P
C:\SB16\AWEUTIL /S
C:\SB16\CT3DSE ON
If that case the be run it when ever your in pure dos mode

Yes, your card is not initialized properly for DOS.
CTCM - low level PnP initialization Utility.
AWEUTIL /S - CQM initialization.
Plus - try to configure the Card to standard P330 and H5 with CTCU and BIOS reserving. Several games don't work with non-default SB settings.

Asus P4P800 SE/Pentium4 3.2E/2 Gb DDR400B,
Radeon HD3850 Agp (Sapphire), Catalyst 14.4 (XpProSp3).
Voodoo2 12 MB SLI, Win2k drivers 1.02.00 (XpProSp3).

A quick update:
For some reason Midi in Highway Hunter is working again. 😀 So that's 1
Down 3 to go!

@AdamP: Tried you suggestion, but it doesn't change or solve anything. 🙁

@shspvr: Tried your suggestion, and the only thing worth noting, is that it
changes my settings from A220 I5 D1 H6 P300 E620 T6 to
A220 I7 D1 H7 P300 E620 T6

@Gamecollector: Will try your suggestion shortly.

I have tried changing the Autoexec.bat to say P330, but it seems to revert
back to P300 when I restart in MS-DOS Mode. Is there a way to force it to
P330?

Thanks for all the suggestions. 😀

Update: AWEUTIL /s still just gives me the same thing: Reverb... Chorus...
etc. but it doesn't help at all.

I'm still stuck on P300 with the AWE64. If I change the Autoexec.bat file to
P330 it just reverts to P300. 🙁

@AdamP How can I tell in DOS Mode? I'm guessing it's not FM, but I'm not
sure.

Thanks.

What motherbaord do you have
If you bios has the option for IRQ assign use Legacy ISA option in BIOS buy assign IRQ 5 to Legacy ISA in stead of PCI/ISA PnP option

The hopely it be
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6

In you you my want add CONFIG.SYS
shell=c:\command.com /e:1024 /p

Thanks.

You have to go into each game's sound setup to see which driver you're using.

@shspvr: It's a 440LX (P2) Chipset with Phoenix Bios (Fujitsu Siemens).
It seems to have the option to change IRQ's and stuff, but I wouldn't
have a clue where to begin. 🙁

@AdamP: Wolf 3D doesn't let you specify what sound card you have,
it has some sort of AutoDetect built-in, but it's not picking up my
Sound Card anymore. 🙁 It's the same with Darkseed, it has to autodetect,
you can't manually select.

it does autodetect but inside the game you can select roland, adlib/sb, and pc speaker for sound and something similar for music not including adlib.

My shareware version doesn't have roland. Is it only available on the full version?

@Totempole

Try running diagnose.exe to see what works and what doesn't. Be sure to have AWEUTIL loaded, or it may not detect your wavetable. I'd also reserve the "standard" SB resources (IRQ5, DMA1 etc) in the BIOS.

@shspvr: IRQ isn't really the problem sound is working for everything except Wolf3D, the main issue is Midi, or lack thereof in many games I think it's as a result of my card being set to P300 instead of P330, but I can't seem to change it.
