I've been having a problem with DOOM, DOOM2 and Rise Of The Triad where digital sound effects stop playing after a certain amount of time. Sometimes it will be fine for ages, but sometimes the sound will stop after less than 5 minutes.

When this happens, digital sounds stop playing completely, but MIDI music (General Midi via MPU on port 330) continues without problems.

It seems to be connected to the number of sounds being played, because I can reproduce the problem reliably just by starting an Ultraviolence game on E1M1 and running into the first room on the left with enemies. A lot of effects are played simultaneously as they attack. The digital sound usually cuts out before I die.

Spec:

P233 MMX
Asus TXP4
64MB
Trio 64V
3dfx Voodoo
SB16
YMF718 w/XR385

Ultimate Doom 1.9 under DOS 7.1 (Win98)

Things I've tried with no effect:
Disabling L2 cache
Changing soundcard to a different SB16
Removing YMF718
Changing sound settings (e.g. selecting SB Pro, reducing number of simulateous effects)
Clean real-mode boot without any drivers

Any ideas appreciated 😀 All other games work fine as does Windows sound.

Yamaha? I remember I had a quite similiar problem with my OPL3-SAX and digital sounds playback. Manually adding the SETUPSA.EXE /S to autoexec/dosstart seemed to resolve this issue.
