I know most of you are aware of this, but I found this SETBLAST.EXE utility which comes with Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold.

It shows you all the Sound Blaster types at the top. Then using arrow keys you can select your configuration and let the utility update your AUTOEXEC.BAT.

Quite nifty 😀

This is a crap utility. Apart from the fact that you're not told whether your Sound Blaster Pro should be Type 2 or 4, if I did not know better, I would assume from the way it is presented that if I have a Sound Blaster, I should configure it at address 210, DMA Channel 0 and Interrupt 2.

When you press F1 it displays a 8 page help document. The utility can probe what settings your card is at. I really the visual nature of it.

To me that util is just meant to update your autoexec.bat with the BLASTER variable , I never thought it would detect anything 🤣

and yeah, what the deal with type 5 ?!

Yea it has various stages of testing. The first one is just probing and finally it outputs some sound 😀

I was playing around with Sound Blaster install disks, and I tried the disks for the SB MCV. Interestingly, the install program set T3 in the SET BLASTER variable. I do not have a high resolution picture of the card, but it seems to use the DSP 2.00 DIP chip that can be found on later SB 1.5s. Apparently, Creative was a little loose about SB Types, as you can see here : ftp://78.46.141.148/driver/Creative/Soundblas … WE/CARDINFO.TXT

Compare that to earlier install programs, which set stuff according to the canonical way.

I'd love the Sound Blaster Pro Microchannel Install Disks to verify that the card sets T5 in the variable.
