Does anyone know whether any icon packs for QuikMenu III are available anywhere?

Not that I am aware if. It does import Windows .ico files, but the palette comes up wrong when you do so. I ended up manually cleaning up the icons in the built in editor after importing them. Perhaps there was a way to do that better, but I didn't stumble on it.

This is what my QM3 setup with imported Windows icons looks like (note some of the colors are wrong):

This website http://archive2.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/sho … ad.php?t=219550 mentions that the icons that were found to work have the following specs:

Width 32
Height 32
Horz. Res. 96dpi
Vert. Rex. 96dpi
Bit Depth 32
Frame Count 1

I have a feeling though that 32 bit depth may be too much? One of the posters on that site also mentions that the icons may be 40x40 and 16 colors (which makes more sense).

Maybe do a search for 16 color windows icons or .ico or something like that, so that icons you may find are already in 16 colors so you don't have to change anything. I am guessing that this is a long shot though.

The windows icons laxdragon mentions most likely contain more than 16 colors and that is why they are not perfect, but they look great cleaned up in the above photos.

Anyway, I remember that there were many shareware and freeware icon editors available for DOS and windows back in the day, and I believe that you can use NeoPaint or even PhotoShop (if you have those programs) to play around with different icon sizes and colours.

It may be a lot of work, but the menu looks really cool and I think it would be worth the time and effort to get the icons to look right (as laxdragon has done).

The icons are 32x32 and 16 colors, but they must match the QuickMenu III default 16-color palette to look right (which is different than the standard Windows 16-color palette).

(Edit) P.S. Here is my own icon collection for QM3 from back in the day. Note that the ZIP contains the file "QM_COLOR.DEF", and also contains all of the stock QM3 icons (as well as all of the custom ones that I had created throughout the years).

^ thanks for sharing the icons, grabbed!

Yer welcome! 😀

P.S. Attached is a screenie of all of my custom icons that I've added to that default QM3 icons collection file ("QM_COLOR.DEF") throughout the ages 😀

(Edit) P.P.S. "What the hell are those first four icons in the screenie?" you ask 🤣? Three air conditioning companies that I used to provide PC support for back in the day... General Air Control, A-TOP Air Conditioning, and AMH Air Conditioning; and the fourth icon was an iconized version of my own business logo <grin> 😀

Thank you for clarifying that (regarding icon size and color palette)....after reading this post, I have become very interested in setting up QuikMenu III on one of my DOS systems.

And, yes, thank you very much for the icons! very cool. I am sure I will use some of these in my setup when I put it together.

BTW, I really like the wolfenstein and arkanoid icons (about halfway down the page).

You guys REALLY need to do that... IM(NotSo)HO QM3 is the ABSOLUTE BEST DOS menu system ever created! 😀

I bought and used it (or earlier versions) for YEARS (1991+) on my old 486DX4-100 ( http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/sno … _486DX4-100.htm , piccie #4 from the top).

I've tried many DOS menu programs throughout the decades, and that one always worked the best... NO memory overhead when running programs, ALL ran programs logged, pretty GUI, and integrated network support and other tools (email, calculator, file manage, etc..).

The only close second that I like (which had NO where near as many features as QM3) was the ancient "Point and Shoot" text-based DOS menu system. I used that one for many a year as well, pre-1992/1993 😀

Thanks, glad you liked them 😀

Again, thanks! 😀

If my memory serves me correctly, both of those I created from actual screenshots from the games (e.g. the Wolf3D one from the game's titlescreen). Then resizing and downsampling the screenshots using Paint Shop Pro, and then matching the 16-color QM3 palette as closely as possible.

As far as the Arkanoid one, I really don't even remember WHAT game that actually was... although I'm quite sure that I have it backed up on my old 486 system backup CDs (as well as an external USB drive) 🤣!

P.S. Attached are a few choice screenshots of my old QM3 setup (these screenshots are a select few that are located at one of the links I mentioned above -> http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/sno … II/Screenshots/ ):

"02_QuikMenu_III_Weeds_Main_Menu.png"
Hehe, notice my "WinDoZe 95-ish" buttons at the bottom left <grin> 😀

"09_QuikMenu_III_Weeds_Games_I_Menu.png"
Ahhh... NOW I remember what those two other "arkanoid" games were: "Bananoid" and "Break Machine" 😀

"15_QuikMenu_III_Weeds_DOS_Utilities_Menu.png"
Hehe, icon "S": "WeedFont" version 3.0... I totally forgot obout that one, a QBasic utility that I had coded to control various font and text format capabilites of my old Panasonic KXP-2123 dot-matrix printer. BTW, I STILL have that old printer boxed up somewhere 😀

"18_QuikMenu_III_Weeds_Programs_Menu.png"
Simply MY way of "thumbing my nose" at WinDoZe 95 back in the day (BTW, those ran W311WFWG) 🤣! I figured, "what the hey?"... *I* will put *WINDOWS* on an "all programs-ish" looking button 🤣! 😀 TAKE THAT, BILLY GATES!!!

Really cool! NeoSoft got back to me today. You can download the official icon expansion pack here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1s--ZfwkGSM … dit?usp=sharing.

I get an error message when I try to install it. I will try again this evening.

If it doesn't install properly, open up the "ICONLIB.ZIP" file that is contained in the "QM3IconLib.zip" download, and simply copy the PCX images to wherever your QM3 wallpaper is stored on your hard drive. Then, copy (or rename) the included "ICONS.$$$" file to the filename "QM_COLOR.DEF" in your QM3 directory (overwriting the original).

Note that if you already have any custom icons in your original installed copy of that "QM_COLOR.DEF" file, they will be overwritten!

Lastly, after looking at the included PCX format wallpaper images, I vaguely remember that I myself also had that icon and wallpaper pack back in the day, In other words, my "QM_COLOR.DEF" file that I linked to previously will already have all of those icon-pack icons in it 😀

BTW (sort of off-topic), but speaking of NeoSoft... does anyone remember the ancient DOS screensaver made by them called "Phantom Screen"? 😀 How's about "NeoBook" for DOS? And, of course, one can't forget "NeoPaint" for DOS? Hehe, I bought 'em all back in the day, and more recently (well, actually, years ago), NeoBook for Windows -> http://www.neosoftware.com/neobook/userinfo.php?uid=54 😀

Hi Weeds! I was playing around with QM yesterday and decided to try out your stuff - should the zip contain icon files too? It only seems to contain the .DEF file?

Apologies if I've missed something simple, like the icons are IN the .DEF file 😀
