Is there any way to mess a little in already compiled game code?

Blackthorn is the one of my beloved game I used to play it a lot as a kid and It would be funny to see how it performs in non-standard conditions (double inventory, god mod). Unfortunately, the whole game is compiled to only 2 files - a small executive and data file. I tried to edit DATA.DAT with hex editior but it's completely unreadable. Is there any way to mess in this file or to edit RAM while the game is running?

Use DOSBox debugger.

In real DOS, you can use GW32 to mess with memory and cheat.

I have traveled across the universe and through the years to find Her.
Sometimes going all the way is just a start...

For another option, you could also try a disassembler, though you'll need to look for one that specifically handles 16-bit applications. Maybe Radare would work.

Yes, I always ramble this much.

There are existing trainers for Blackthorne, which include God mode, and I think limitless inventory too. No need to reinvent the wheel...
